How often do you see the AI do that in SP? And the Americas won't help much if France occupies the Iberian peninsula. Spain gets no manpower from the Americas.

Yes, but France has about twice the Manpower of England and more and richer provinces.
Ah well, I suppose it is about one's style of play.

In SP, if you are playing a GC, I say England is easiest, though Spain or France may technically be the "strongest" with all those vassals, wealth, and manpower. France or Spain both are strong at the start of the 1492 scenario but France is under the gun in 1419. If France overcomes England's "Harry", they can consolidate their position in one war. England can take half of France and surround France and her allies in the first war but England needs one more war to finish the job.

My favorite strong nation is England in the GC. You can conquer France, keep French culture and take ALL their benefits except for their Leaders and events(including manpower if you didn't edit out the straits from Kent to Calais). I think England is only three provinces short of being able to keeping French culture after the Hundred Year War cut-off.

RL prevents me from considering MP so I don't actually know who has the real advantage with two humans playing England and France. Hmm, that would be interesting so see if France kicks England off the continent or if England smothers France in a fight to the end.

If you are talking what country is the most powerful to play as a human in Single Player mode, it depends. If you like early power, you can be either Spain or Portugal; Spain is slightly easier because it only has to take 5 additional Iberian provinces to hold the penninsula, whereas Portugal must take all but three. But Portugal gets to start its explorations WAY ahead of Spain, which is a real plus when you are sending explorers to places YOU want them to go (e.g., the Carribean), not where Portugal actually sent them. You can build up quite an empire quite quickly with either country, and can knock France out of the running early on, leaving only the BWB to deal with.

In late game, it has to be France, simply because of the leader file. Beating England early is easy, the slow but steady rise in power as you consolidate all of Western Europe isn't tough and lays groundwork for a huge ass country, and you will get to explore and colonize eventually. Then, when the leaders kick in, you just power through all opposition.

I'd have to put Austria up there pretty close to the top, too. You end up with tons of provinces doing nothing but waiting, then get to wipe out both east AND west of you. Of course, you don't get to do the colonizing thing so easily, meaning you have to take maps from neighboring countries like France and Spain, but who cares when you can just plow your way through Turkey and the Near East, as well as Russia and the steppes? :D

If you are asking which country does best as an AI nation, left unmolested, then unquestionably it is Austria. They always seem to gobble up most of Central Europe, and force you to deal with them early on to avoid long tough slogging later. If you are playing England or Portugal, it's really hard not to eventually face a BWB.

If you are talking MP, then I'd have to go with Sweden. Damn files are stacked in your favor, no surprise.

France or England, in 1419.

France gets more and better leaders, but less explorers and admirals, and England can keep french culture and fully benefit of the french provinces.

Both, once unified and the HYW over (ten years, in any way), can wage war against Portugal and Spain to conquer their maps and their colonies & TPs, so as to benefit from the advantages of the iberians.

Both have an easy time converting to reformed faith, which is a better than catholic, economically, and hold on the Lower Countries more easily, as they both have a fair number of reformed provinces.

Spain comes to third, for the advantages about exploration, but Iberia proper is not fantastically rich (apart from a couple of provinces). Portugal, if conquering the rest of Iberia, is fine (and with a land access to Africa, so as to benefit from the manpower of african colonies and converted-pagans) and is deemed a 4th place, but demands some skills.

Tied with Portugal are Austria (the best non-colonizer, with many great inheritances and good leaders) and Russia (for Siberia, from which come its furs and manpower).

Sweden is good too, with many possibilities (P'dox is a swedish company, after all ;) ).

But my choice would go to France or England.

I agree with the Last Guy

England in 1419 cuz winning the 100 year war is easy, france in 1492 once England has lost the french Culture. Also I like China a lot, even though they aren't quite as tough as the others. (Pick the Look outward option when Zheng He dies or you will never compete in Tech) I have had Chinese games where my yearly census tax brought in around 2k :)
