Carthage was just as competent as Rome, I hope we'll see something similar with Axis versus Allies in Hoi2, but this time in the form of Punic wars.

I hope the Carthaginian Republic will have its own special gameplay, and will fight on equal terms with the Roman Republic.

It may not be quite equal to the Roman republic (it wasn't historically, as Rome had access to far greater manpower), but it should be ok.

I think the real question is whether or not the AI can handle an empire spread out across a series of Islands, North Africa and Iberia successfully.

Highly doubtful the AI will be "smart", so it'll cheat. A good comparison would be playing as Sicily against Aragon and Castille in EU3.

I manage to win with ease because the AI doesn't know how to go in for the kill.

Yep, but Carthago should have the money for renting loads of libyan, numidian and iberian mercenaries.

I'm somewhat surprised that you can start on individual days like in EU3 considering that there isn't much around to my knowledge that is recorded in days during the time period. :p

And thats at the time of the Second Punic War. The odds should be somewhat better for Carthage at the time of the First Punic War.

I thought it was only years in EUIII. Then again, I'm as dumb as a post, so how should I know. :D

I expect it's just due to the shorter time period. Or something.

I dunno, seems a little pointless to me, unless players wanted to start an exact time when ownership of a territory or something changed.

Interesting also in that screenshot how it rates the difficulty for playing Carthage at the outset of the Second Punic war as being very easy. Doesnt sound like Carthage is underrated at all.

Well, Carthage did not lay with it's back broken anymore. The territory lost in the first Punic War was replaced with richer/larger new provinces in Spain, and I'd say Carthage was well prepared for a new war indeed. They should be modelled as a very strong nation at this time.

But of course their rival Rome had grown in power as well......

Also, having Spain allowed them to have a base to work off of from the mainland as to the island Sciliy base.

Indeed, it allowed them to ignore the naval power imposed by Rome in the First Punic War.

There are events that are recorded day and all (even time of day for some few ones, like the eruption of Vesuvius and the assassination of Julius Cæsar) but those are exceptions of course. Theres even the familiar problem of placing some events in the right year because the consular years was actually overlapping our calendar, so placing them in the right year if no months or anything else revealing information is given can be impossible.

I think Carthage should be powerful, but in the long run weaker than Rome. The way she herself conducted the 2nd Punic War showed she was not worthy of victory. If it wasn't for Barca family she should have been diminished to the status of the minor power during the 1st Punic War.

Will not stop me from playing her first, however :D EDIT: Provided I find the graphics mod to change her ugly country color :)

PI has recently upgraded the AI in EU3 NA 2.2. I wouldn't be surprised if that was a result of the AI created for EU:Rome so it may be at least on par with where NA 2.2. I can attest that there is a night and day difference between the AI's ability before and after the 2.2 patch.

The First and Second Punic War were very close-fought and really didn't go Rome's way until the very end. While Carthage undoubtedly didn't have the manpower of the SPQR, she was far richer. The city of Carthage made Rome look like a provincial backwater, for example.

I'm more concerned about how the Gauls and other "barbarians" are going to be modelled. The greatest weakness of Gaul had nothing to do with be less civilized or less advanced...and everything to do with them being unable to stop killing eachother, even at the very end...

It may not be quite equal to the Roman republic (it wasn't historically, as Rome had access to far greater manpower), but it should be ok.

I think the real question is whether or not the AI can handle an empire spread out across a series of Islands, North Africa and Iberia successfully.

Shouldnt it even be stronger than rome..
Bigger wealthier.. more powerful fleets etc.
Ah yeah, a bit less manpower maybe.

Like the opening gambit for muscovy vs novgorod? :D

Interesting also in that screenshot how it rates the difficulty for playing Carthage at the outset of the Second Punic war as being very easy. Doesnt sound like Carthage is underrated at all.

Except those ratings lilely just account for the starting position.
A war with rome may or may not happen..
