I haven't played and I have a question regarding truces.

What are the only times a truce can be broken without penalty?

I am pretty sure if I remember correctly that when you get called into a defensive war you do not break a truce.

Also I was wondering if you give a warning to someone that you have a truce with and they attack a neighbor do you get a truce breaking penalty when war starts?

  1. No penalty when a nation is added to a war, but you didn't specifically DOW them
    1. For example, DOWing the Protectorate when you have truce against an overlord.
    2. Same applies in the case of a vassal, but normally if you have a truce with overlord you will against the vassals too - but could happen e.g. if the overlord added a new vassal since you got the truce.
    3. DOWing nation A who then calls its ally NationB, when you have a truce with NationB.
  2. No penalty on defensive war CTA, as you said.
    1. Though the AI acts like there is one, and won't answer defensive CTAs when it has a truce with the target - at the expense of losing its alliance and great cost to its relations
  3. No penalty when you Enforce Peace to inject yourself into a war in which you have a truce against one of the enemies.
    1. But that can't be the Warleader, as you can't Enforce Peace on an enemy with whom you have a truce.
  4. No penalty when you inherit a war on behalf of a newly made vassal
    1. Just fixed in the most recent patch, 1.5.
  5. No penalty when you're called into a coalition war.
  6. No penalty when you accept a Warning CTA!
Right, got the Warning test done in the end. The above list is all I know/can think of to test :)

There is also attacking protectorates. A bit of an exploit, but there it is. Idk if it still works as I haven't played 1.5 yet.

Good point! Still works :) Will edit my OP.

EDIT: Actually, it's more general than that. Any time a nation gets added to a war, you don't get the penalty. So applies to vassals too, e.g. if the nation with whom you have a truce added a new vassal since you got the truce (so the vassal wasn't in the original war and you don't have a truce with them.)

Ditto when an enemy WL calls in its allies - though of course if these are AI nations, they will decline if they have a truce. But I'm 99% sure that if they didn't decline, you the attacker would get no penalty when they were added.

Maybe it's simpler to ask - when DO you get a stab hit for breaking truce? And I think the answer is basically just "When you DOW that nation directly."

And I believe there's possibly still some inheriting-wars type bugs, I heard of one regarding Colonial Nations? (Though that might be alliance-breaking rather than truce break stab-hit.)
