No, but "is not ferst languege waaah" is not a valid excuse to speak the global lingua franca poorly.

It absolutely is. And English is hardly the only lingua franca in use anyway, so unless your French/Spanish/Russian/Mandarin is better than Will Steel's English, I suggest you refrain from implying that others are inferior just because you and they happened to be exposed to different languages as infants.

Discussion about language, lingua franca, and a disk that contains only steam?
Is this the Metal Gear Solid V board?

Also, the OP joined in 2003, and this is his first post since 2010 December, around the time Pdox went full steam (ahead).
I guess him not knowing Steam makes more sense with that, huh?

Also, for the Steam detractors:

Steam haters might be a small minority, but guess the steam dislikers are more than that ;-) I for one see it as an unfortunate necessity, which have it´s benefits sure and have improved with it´s services mainly due to European consumer laws and a general evolving standard from going from a new concept to a more settled institution.

I for one dislike steam due to their majority, even monopoly-like dominance and how they have treated customers in the past. Yet as stated, it has been improved so benefits are getting better :)

Ultimately, the amount dislike or hate doesn't matter if supporting non-Steam platforms is a financial loss.

Ultimately, the amount dislike or hate doesn't matter if supporting non-Steam platforms is a financial loss.

And that´s your prerogative and quite understandable, patching and beta-patching is easier through steam instead of watching forum all the time. And since you can use the saved money from having it collected in one central place you have more to create and evolve your games. I understand the reason behind the change and support it, I don´t fully support steam as mentioned but it´s necessary and does make it easier to get games legally.

Though I dislike your initial statement before putting beta-patching on steam solely, where you stated that no free copies would be given since it would have no effect on our purchases on GG, a site you previously supported and refered to prior to steam. Yet this was changed later where free copies were given to steam. Only meant that I had used extra cash in order to get steam additions of CK2 since I used the betas since they most of the times fixed greater issues and due to the statement that support would be on steam from then on.

Could buy some on sale, but still ended with giving you extra money for the same game. I thought of it as a donation really, in support of you and has since gifted it to my brother in order to recruit him as a player too. Still a bit frustration when choosing GG due to your support of it and steam low services at the time, thinking your support to GG was due to you getting more monetary benefits there than steam (thus giving you more money to produce games).

The true reason why people make mistakes in non-native langueages is one of confusion. You will sometimes do a direct translation in places you shouldn't, the grammar of your own lagueage use, and that is completely understandable.

You cannot insult 90% of the world for not having English as a native langueage.

I play a lot of Football Manager, and its interesting to see the exact same conversations with the exact same kind of flaming on here about Steam that they were getting 6 years ago when they switched to Steam as well. I can understand why a lot of people don't want to install yet another programme before they play their games, and to be honest I'm always a little wary of having to agree to another license before I can play (whereas you keep a disc, you have physical property).

Having said that, Steam has been massive for a lot of developers, and I have been given literally thousands of hours of enjoyment from games that I only found and could afford thanks to Steam. EU4's updates model pretty much only exists thanks to Steam, because they can force updates on people - the fact that they let us play older versions through the betas meni is one of the more customer-friendly things a developer can do these days.

Congratulations, everyone cares.

No one may care, but I do. If you are going to berate someone just because he/she is poor at English, then congratulations, your name is going to be written in golden words in the history of failed logic.

Moving it prevents the automatics patches.
My assumption is that if they're avoiding using Steam, they're just not going have it running except when they want to check for patches. If they do keep Steam running, then having Automatic Updates switched off as Quaade mentioned also achieves the same goal.

Copying it is only necessary if you want to maintain a couple of different versions. You like playing multiplayer on the weekends so you need to stay up to date, but you also want to finish that campaign from the previous patch for example.

I'm baffled that any gamers who were around before Steam would want to go back to those days. It makes finding, purchasing, installing, and updating games ridiculously convenient.

What's this about free copies? Could you explain?

If you owned a gamersgate copy of CK2, you would be able to put it into steam and receive it there for "free". Since you already paid for it and doing so before this would not have been valid :) It wasn´t free as in you had never paid for it in the first place, only for those who already owned it elsewhere. Believe it was when regular patches was announced wouldn´t be updated outside of steam :)

Not to devalue your language skills (which are seriously amazing, good job learning all of those), but the language of a minor island nation IS the lingua franca of the civilized world since about a century and a half ago. Just like when Rome controlled most of the known world and it's language (Latin) affected a large chunk of the world, so is English a dominant language these days. Polyglot that you are, denying the global status of the English language is a pretty big lapse in logic.

If you install a steam game on a computer without steam, it should prompt you to install the client and make an account/log in. Since OP ends up with a steam icon, at least part of that seems to have worked.

That is a fair question. I think that officially Paradox doesn't sell hardcopies of EU4 (although there might be legit distributors doing this in some countries).

Walk into an EB (Australian Gamestop) and they sell 'Gold' Editions of the popular Paradox titles, with the base game and all the DLC up to roughly just after when Conquest of Paradise came out, for around $20-$40 AUD depending on the sales period.

Being fluent in a bunch of closely related Indian languages is the norm rather than the exception in that area, just so you know. Not to detract from his abilities, but fluency in a multitude of languages in a certain niche isn't polyglotism.

I'm baffled that any gamers who were around before Steam would want to go back to those days. It makes finding, purchasing, installing, and updating games ridiculously convenient.
It does, and online distribution doubtlessly has immense benefits. However, as much as I have been a Steam fanboy before, Valve has proven that giving monopoly to a single company is not necessarily a good idea. I never want to go back to before distribution, but I'm starting to buy games on GOG if they are available on both platforms.

Steam dominates the market and because of that I can't blame Paradox for only releasing their games on it, but also because of that, I will never feel safe in buying games on Steam if they are available elsewhere.

Steam is really handy, and because of that Valve has been given entirely too much power.

While I fully understand the reason why somebody does not want a monopoly...I do not really want to rely on several platforms. It is already getting annoying with Origin and Uplay. Only using Steam is a lot more convenient. I don't want a dozen different platforms on my PC and start a different one for every game.

I know it's more simple to only have one platform, that's why I hope Launchbox or something like it gets bigger. Basically you have however many digital stores and libraries you want, and then you have a separate program acting as the "digital games shelf". Ensuring that you only need one program to launch all your games through, but your entire game library isn't controlled by a single company with a monopoly.
