I remember that the relevant dev diary stated that patriarchs had to be bishops, but I do have some questions as I don't yet fully understand the setup for Orthodox heretics.

For my AAR I am playing as a Nestorian character, which is considered an Orthodox heresy. However, my court chaplain of Alania (which is an independent duchy) was Orthodox; after he converted one of my children back to Orthodoxy I fired him, so now I have no court chaplain and can't hire another. When I click the court chaplain tab, the list is blank.

What do I have to do in order to get a new court chaplain? Preferably I'd like a Nestorian so I can begin converting my Orthodox provinces to Nestorian, but because I'm not a kingdom I don't yet have my own patriarch.

I'm a bit confused, and I've probably mixed up some of the terminology here. In short: how can I get a Nestorian court chaplain, does he have to be a bishop, and what changes if I'm able to form the kingdom of Alania? (Don't kingdoms have a different setup?)

I think the pentarchy system is different as presumably that would involve installing Nestorians as bishops of Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem.

Thanks for your help. :)

I am pretty sure that you can only hire a court chaplain of your own religion, which is probably why your list is empty as a Nestorian.

What I would do in that situation is revoke the title of your prior chaplain, and put a Nestorian in his place.

And I don't think you can restore the Pentarchy as a heretic, although I am not positive about that one.

You can, technically, install Nestorians in all five Pentarchy sees, and I believe they show up on the religion tab. The relevant events won't fire, however, and you cannot Mend the Great Schism.
