I really hope they have given up play balance for realistic Naval Combat! Planes from Carriers should go after other carriers or allowed to be assigned to targets like other carriers! In WW2 they went after the enemy carriers not their destroyers or escorts the primary target was the enemy carriers then enemy battleships, or escorts or transports. HOI 3 was a real disappointment in this respect that my air attacks or naval combat with ships were spread among all ships in the task force and not after the most import targets of enemy carriers, then battleships. I want the ability to go after the ships I choose in a fleet without the AI deciding for me. If there are any post regarding this please send me link.

I don't think you can tell your naval bombers to focus on specific ships (i.e I don't think you can specifically target the Akagi). However, I assume your naval bombers will be more likely to attack capital ships than escorts and also will try to focus the attacks on some ships instead of spreading the damage across all enemy ships (if it's similar to Hoi III how effective they are at choosing targets and concentrating fire is probably related to doctrines)

Even so it, would be nice if you could designate which targets should your carrier wings prioritize (i.e focus on carriers, focus on battleships, focus on enemy ships firing on your ships etc...)

True early in the war. Late in the war destroyer radar pickets were a prime target for the Japanese so they could bust the radar screen and try to mess up the CAP to create an opening to attack the main force.

From the WWW it looked like aircrafts could focus on a single ship.

It is worth mentioning that USA and UK never lost a battleship after end of 1941 (from any cause) and no fleet carriers after end of 1942 (from any cause), actually the only battleships USA lost in the war was during the Pearl Harbour attack.

So even if aircrafts could focus down a ship it was hardly an easy task.

The navy as a whole should be able to provide anti air cover, see videos about the flak screen USA navy could put up and you understand why they did not lose a fleet carrier or battleship after end of 1942.

I saw a "naval targeting" stat that's increased by carrier doctrine technology. Maybe it makes planes target the more important ships first.

This feels a bit like cherry picking. After the end of 1942 the US had vastly superior radar and fire control systems and were beginning to produce superior aircraft. Battleships didn't directly take part in many actions post 1942. We're not even taking Industrial output into account.

That being said, if you're attacking 1944 capital ships with 1940 aircraft you should have trouble sinking those ships.

Targeting specific ships was always difficult.

How many times was the Enterprise reported sunk by the Japanese? How many times were ships misidentified in the heat of combat by aircraft (and, for that matter, submarines and surface ships)?

I would be very suspicious of a game where you could magically direct aircraft to focus fire on individual targets. That might work in an MMO, but it's not realistic or appropriate for WWII style warfare.

Maybe some statistical favoring of capital ships over screens could be implemented, but let's not get carried away.

Naval Combat will not be recreated with any meaningful realism in this game, I am 100% sure of this. It's just too complicated. It will be abstracted to the point where it's just dice rolls, which is why it won't be possible to target ships.

The one major WWW naval battle we saw looked realistic enough in my book. Some weight torwards targetting more important ships, if they are found, would be nice.

We simply haven't seen enough of how the gameplay mechanics work to make this judgement at this stage. If you're in the beta, then you may be in a better position to judge, but I gather you aren't as you'd be unable (as far as I understand - although I'm not expert - the beta testers are under a pretty strict NDA) to post about it. The mechanics they do have (we know there's individual ship positioning and targeting, separate mechanics for torpedoes, and critical hits) are a decent sized step forward for the game, and definitely open up the potential to appropriately simulated naval warfare at a level of abstraction appropriate to HoI4's scale.

Only 33 days to go, and then we'll be able to start getting a taste, but even then, these kind of games take many hours of play before they're well understood. The devs will get far more useful feedback from fans if the feedback they receive is based on a considered opinion developed with appropriate levels of experience with the game, rather than on knee-jerk reactions.
