Tbh trade protection feature really isn't worth what it provides right now, as it both ruins performance (with gateways) and apparently ruins ai (who no longer devote their fleets to wars). And the mechanic has brought me more distain than anything when using it, as its annoying to assign them, and you end up with more entries in fleet tab. And is it only me that accidentally click that button instead of jumpdrive?

I was attacked by the AI twice actually and it actually attacked me (one was rated as superior but my bastions and fleet positioning was enough to keep them at bay), but both times were in the early game before I'd sorted myself out and developed my heartland (heartspace?). In the mid and late game, when I feel settled and more secure, I've noticed I'm just miles ahead of them so they don't bother.

That being said I'm also a trash tier player who literally plays on Edit: normal (forgot this word lol) difficulty (apparently a rarity on the forums), so...maybe this is a problem more for people like me than y'all.

Don't worry about difficulty. For SP just do what's fun / enjoyable and to heck with anyone else.

I've never played on Grand Admiral / High Agressive / Max Advanced start AI / Ironman before either. I have noticed though that since 1.9 I've been constantly tweaking the game settings to hone in on the new "just right".

Edit: I'm only doing Commodore right now but think I'll be moving to Admiral in the next game. I suspect that will be just about right. If they fix the AI I might bump back down to Commodore -- we'll need to see.

The AI is garbage and you should't need to give it Grand Admiral level cheats in order for it to feign any level of competence in space war. PDX seriously needs to make AI a priority for the rest of 2.2 and any 2.3 patches (if the game is still supported in 2019).

...you're having a laugh, right? You can't seriously think Paradox is going to drop support for this game? What on Earth, Sanctuary, or any other planet makes you think they'd do that?

The only reason they'd drop support would be $ If the cost to fix the game outweighs the profit potential THEN dropping would be an option.

Note: Based on their other titles I suspect Stellaris will see a 3.x series of updates before we need to worry about dropping of support / Stellaris II [not Stellaris I ver 2.0] ; etc.

Been attacked a few times. But I am playing a criminal megacorp, and I take no effort to befriend people. I do however not bother with the whole branch system, which makes me second guess the criminal aspect. (Them being able to white peace me out of branches is just annoying as heck)

Higher difficulty may help. Players have problem with balancing economy at the start of the game. And so does the AI.
Giving AI a couple resource boost will help them with mid economy crisis. And allows to get that extra value to turn into ships.
In my games there is only war. AI against me. Me against AI. AI against each other.

The big problem is that the AI doesn't assess the combined strength of its fleets when calculating its odds of winning an encounter, only individual fleets.

If this is true... Wouldn't this be the core of the problem? From what I've seen it certainly seems plausible - Hostile neighbors with overwhelming combined strength, but their individual fleets weaker than my main fleet.
