I have finally beaten the Russians (after 6 weeks of bitter play and lord knows how many new starts and "autosave" reloads). It's early 1944, I have the UK, France, Spain, most of the world in a military alliance, and I have Bitter Peace. But alas, I have the Canadian edition which means no manual and the manual project doesn't cover my question, which is:

What exactly do I get from the Bitter Peace? I had to disband my units east of the Urals because they wouldn't move (supply? it seems) and some Hungarian and Romanian units have vanished. It seems as if I get everything west of the Urals. But again, what exactly do I get? Also, If I don't garrison the Soviet Union, any chance they will reconstitute and come back at me?

I don't know exactly what provinces you get but you get a fair chunk of USSR and if Japan is Axis they also get a huge chunk too. They are left with only 2 VP provinces which makes for an easy annexation down the road.

And yes you will need to garrison them as they may DOW you because you have control of some of their national provinces. I learnt this the hard way and they almost reached Moscow before I was able to pull troops from the US-Canadian front back to Germany to counter attack.

Officer: «Good news boys! Your leaving the North-American Front and your heading back to Europe»

Soldier: «Finally, leaving this bloody Canado-American front from hell! We've been here 4 months and still havnt made it to the Mississippi river yet. I'm glad we're heading back. What's the next stop?»

Officer: «The Soviet front... again»

Soldier: « Shite!»

The Bitter Peace is not mentioned in the manual.

You generally get everything west of Magnigotorsk which is about 4 provinces northeast of Stalingrad. If you have stranded units, ask the SU for military access immediately. If they grant it, you just move your units out (though any non German units will be stranded so next game do not move them past the Volga).

If the Soviet Union refuses to give you military access, save the game twice under two different names. Then edit one of the versions and figure out how to give yourself military access by finding an example elsewhere. Each area of the save game applies to one country so find the GER and SOV areas and set up military access.

The Bitter Peace is described in the db/events/ussr file with the tag line Sue for peace with the Germans. It is simple an event in the game and it uses a lot of province ID numbers to identify what territories you get.

The reason that Axis units get trapped is that the event would have to know how many allies the Germans had and then set up military access for each one. Events within the game are static when it comes to things like that: you have to know or assume things in advance and plan for them to write an event, and dealing with lots of potential Axis allies is very difficult to handle with events.
