I have no idea what more I can do to alleviate traffic

A very good thing you can do is, to crisscross your city blocks with lots of pedestrian walkways (you can find them in the 2nd Tab of the parks menu).
If your CiMs can walk to their destination they won´t use their ars (and therefore won´t produce traffic on your streets).

I usually make lots of pedestrian bridges across the roads (so my CiMs don´t have to use traffic lights to cross streets) and also connect city blocks via pedestrian walkways which are adjacent to each other, but aren´t directly connected via streets

Upload your save to the workshop or post some screenshots. Let us have a look.

Got up to 32k, but running into a wall on goods importing, I think. Not sure if planes and ships will be enough, may have to switch to a sort of ... commercial waterfront, with all the res and offices behind them. Subway segregation works great to keep the residential and office zone traffic to a minimum. It's the commercial traffic that's the only problem, now.

Love IVIaarten's walkway idea. Will have to try it. I personally like to use accompanying 2 lane roads for local boulevard traffic (still in the middle of adding trees):
731B180BEF13F133996ECCAC075347482645D860

It also works pretty well if you want to add a high-traffic building on the boulevard, like a cargo station:
5474CD196D7EFAE2B41A91E68A8C2385B58C01F7

Another way to alleviate traffic is to figure out which way your traffic is biased towards (North/South, or East/West?) and you limit the 6-lane roads to that direction. Then have most of the perpendicular roads be 2-lane so it will be a straight shot from one end of the district to the other, like so:

make sure your roundabouts are setup right. the one way system has to be right if you are to have a workable traffic reduction.

having a seperate route for industry traffic als makes the difference so consider makeing the highway intersection branch off between residential and uindustry

6-lane one-way roads don't work very well in this game. I had traffic use only one lane on a 6-lane one-way road in a bad location. Reducing it to a two-lane one-way road made traffic use two lanes instead of one.

I have 175k residents at the moment, and while traffic isn't perfect, it flows.

I keep hearing two solutions, but not how to execute them.

1) Have no traffic lights. I have not found a way to get rid of them. I assume it means to have stop signs?

2) 6-lane roads make traffic worse, but if I downgrade my roads, then traffic gets worse.

Any detailed descriptions on how to make these thing work?

Myself, I have all 6-lane two-way roads. I just keep making offrams to the freeway and many, many intersections so traffic has an alternate route. It has been working great so far, but now I'm near the edge of the map, and all of the traffic is jamming up near the entrance with nowhere to go.

Most of my traffic is now trucks, as my industry is on the edge of the map.

Honestly, study IVaarten's (sorry I probably spelled that wrong) traffic layout. Those little ramp highways work excellent, and it looks pretty cool. You can completely eliminate all traffic lights in your city if you do this and then only use streets instead of avenues. Though I still use some avenues just cause.

traffic.jpg

It is a little tricky getting the roundabout's to stay a perfect circle and still have 8 potential connections. Basically what I do is draw a little cross, usually 3x3 or 4x4 mini tiles and then connect the ends and make a circle, easy enough. Then in between where the cross intersects my roundabout (where i want the ramps to connect) i will draw 4 more connections and then delete all 8 of them, the inside cross included. Then you can attach roads, or in our case ramps to them and it will not deform the circle.

Traffic is pretty much a non factor using this method.

I am also using the toggle zoning mod, as you can see no zoning is allowed on that main avenue, allowing for the side streets to zone all the way up against it.

For industry, and particularly the cargo terminal area, IVaarten has a picture somewhere on this forum with his one way road configuration, it works great too.

there was a chart posted of road junctions that create traffic lights or not. You can either "downgrade" roads to ones that won't create traffic lighted junctions or if you don't want to do that you can get the "toggle traffic lights" mod from the steam workshop that will let you simply turn them off.

Screenshots? If traffic has multiple routes then why did you say traffic is blocked at "the entrance"? The entrance to what? Isn't there more than one?

That would be awesome to have. Then maybe I can make more sense of these issues.

I don't see how it can get much worse.

It gets worse as I have rectangular blocks. Only the short end of the blocks are clogged right now, if I lower street density, itclogs on the long end on the roads as well. Then the whole area is red, instead of just the intersections.

What is the screenshot button? It isn't C or V like SC13.

What I meant by entrance was the edge of the map when traffic enters and dumps traffic right into my industry area.

I'll post some pics later when I can figure out how.

Thanks for the help

Most of my traffic is now trucks, as my industry is on the edge of the map.

Regarding traffic at the end of a highway/at the entrance to the city, first I've found that instead of having it go straight into the city, using a ring road can help provide easy access to traffic going to faraway districts. And as for the actual highway terminus, I've found two solutions that work reasonably well.

1. A large square/roundabout terminus could deal with low and medium traffic. Several boulevards radiate from the square in the example below. This gives them a lot of options. But the heavy lifting is done by the ring road. You can see in the background how a lot of the traffic is dispersed on the shoreline freeway. There are also a few access ramps before it gets to the city gate, but on this map that hasn't been as much of a factor as the ring road or the square.
F5C1E62C1F21A8C4EFE966423368EB5527CA77E2

2. This is for really high capacity transitions and when you don't want to build a second highway. What I call the doughnut terminus, inspired by http://goo.gl/maps/g3oyC. In this example, you can see it disperses in 7 directions. Add/subtract branches from the doughnut based on your capacity requirements. I used Cope's No Despawn Mod on this map, so 7 directions might be overkill for the vanilla version.

F12 is the default steam screenshot I believe, and I think there is one ingame (it may even be the same key but it should be rebindable so you can check in the key bindings screen I guess). Otherwise, if you press "prt sc" it will take a screenshot and copy it to the clipboard so you can paste it into a image editing program, save it and upload it. Or you could use third party software.

I used F12 to take a screenshot, but when I go to my other monitor I can't find it anywhere? Where are the pictures going to?

When you end the game you will see all sceenshots in a separate window ...
there is also a button in this window named "show on disk".
If you press it, you will get straight to the screenshot folder

Another thing I try to do is keep the commercial areas next (or at least close) to the industry. I also give the industry easy access to the highway so the imports/exports don't have to pass by the main city
