In my current game as King Erik IV of Sweden, I've been trying to increase his learning skill. I don't really need it for anything, but that's beside the point.
The event that fired caught my attention... Erik IV fancies himself the Scandanavian answer to Da Vinci, and wants to build a flying machine. So, he starts on the construction of said flying machine, and I get the next event in the chain, deciding who will pilot it. Despite Erik IV being brave, he's not interested and decides to pick one lucky peasant to be pushed off the edge. The choices are: Otis, the blacksmiths overweight son (obviously a bad choice), Meldrick, a dogsbody and dung collecter(or something like that) and the pet dog of a village girl (Which seems like a terribe choice to me, even if Erik IV has the cruel trait).
Meldrick seems to me to be the best choice, so I choose him. I push him off the cliff in the plane, and he promptly crashes. Meldrick survives, however. It is at this point we learn that somebody else in the village has had the same idea and has created their own prototype. Meldrick, tells me not to despair as he has "a cunning plan". (Which turns out be stealing our rivals prototype, which also fails.)
It's at this point that the reference hits me. The event is a reference to a historical-comedy TV series called Blackadder that aired back in the 80's and 90's. Meldrick is a reference to the charecter Baldrick, the loyal dogsbody of the titular Blackadder. One of Baldricks catchphrases was "I have a cunning plan."
This gave me quite the laugh, and I should like to thank Paradox for cheering up my mood at the time, as I was (and still am!) in a particularly long, grueling, and frustrating invasion of Denmark. (Which is no surprise, since Erik IV seems to be spending his time making flying machines and pushing them off cliffs, rather than leading his armies!)
So, what I should like to ask, are their any other references to Blackadder, and others in the game? (Monty Python, perhaps?)
It's to bad though we don't get to keep Meldrick as a permanent part of our court...
