With the new dev diary today and the art of the buildings I finally realized what the UI style makes me think of most.
Board games.
It really stands out with the building art, but it really brings to mind art in games like Agricola or Attika. I really like it, it's detailed but clean enough that it immediately gives the player a clear visual representation of what is being shown. With the Private Industry buildings you get a very good mix of showing both the building and the good being produced. The building also have a bit of a Railroad Tycoon style with how distinctive they are in the building itself so once you recognize the building you almost don't need the visual representation of the resource to remember what it produces (though it is very useful and I'm glad it's there).
The interfaces overall and the interest group and laws screens in particular also look like something you might see as like a board in front of each player in a more complex board game. It looks great, a good way of displaying a lot of information while keeping it from being muddled and confusing.
