I've been trying to get the One Night In Paris achievement, so after 15 tries and about 100 resets to get Spain and/or Austria friendly towards me and not rivals, I did it. In my last game I was curia controller, Spain started off friendly and not a rival, and I have a +2 (this guy made me bankrupt) military adviser with + 10% morale to armies.

I did the standard attack Armagnac's army, retreat everything to England, attack Algiers and call Spain and Portugal in. I decided to go for Algiers over Leinster for the sexy crusade bonuses, which turned out to be the reason I won in the long run.

Needless to say it was HARD. Honestly I don't see how England can win on it's own at all. It sucks to have to use gamey tactics but you have a better chance of winning the lottery AND being struck by lightning at the same time then winning the HYW on your own. Or maybe I'm just terrible at this game. Idk.

So now I'm bankrupt. My army is pathetic and France will probably do whatever it takes to get out of this union. Any tips to keep them in? And king Henry still hasn't produced an heir, even after I have 5 royal marriages....anyone know if France will cancel out of the PU even though I have max prestige?

Also something completely hilarious happened in one of my attempts, Oldenburg somehow inherited Burgundy LOL. Biggest I've ever seen them.

It's possible to do the entire thing a) without allies, b) without going bankrupt, and c) without getting into any other wars.

The way I did it was as follows:

1. Military access from Navarra and Aragon. Blockade the French fleet in port.
2. With your southern army, wipe out the Armanac stack en route to the safe haven of the Aragon side of the border. Wait in Baern to draw as many Frenchies south as you can and cross just before you get jumped. Then run away. This is vital to set up the next part:
3. Use transports to withdraw your Normandy force before it gets attacked at game open. You have a few days leeway, but you'll need to use pause/unpause and be quick about it. But... once you see all the French heading south to pursue the force you just had attack the Armangac troops, wait for it... wait for it... And, if you can, use your transports to jump on one of the besieging stacks in the north. Just be careful if there's a doomstack ready to reinforce the besiegers. But it worked for me once.
4. If you want to do more effective "amphibious assaults", make a few more transports; but don't do this to the detriment of the next step...
5. Build as many mercenaries as you can afford with loans; let them take the manpower hit. If you have time, make them in your southern French provinces and send them over the border to Navarre/Aragon. Otherwise, make them in England and shuttle them down.
6. Meanwhile, transport all of your troops into Navarre/Aragon
7. Lure a French stack into Baern with a teaser stack, and jump them with everything you can once they go for the bait.
8. Try this a few times, but also watch to make sure that you keep an eye on them sieging down your provinces. Try to fleet-assault them if possible.

You still need to get lucky to see if you get the terrain advantage in Baern, and you might take out 3-5 loans by the end of the war. But you'll have France.

This is a good video for how to do it by fr0nt1er.

You can hover over the ruler in France's diplomatic screen, it'll tell what happens when the king dies. I believe you'll keep them as long as prestige doesn't go negative.

Very interesting. I hadn't though of that. I'm at the point where I can integrate France if I want, but I'm going to keep them alive for the time being.

I took the religious ideas, if I convert to protestant does my PU end?
