any chance of adding an AI-only port supply bonus to encourage amphibious invasions?

go to staticmodifiers.txt in the common folder in the HOI3 Directory then you can add NAVAL_BASE_EFFICIENCY (i think, PM me if you want me to confirm that) to all the ai's on the diffucults you play,

this works as a multiplier on naval base throughput so 1 doubles throughput 2 triples it etc

You have to balance what you put on the border with the USSR. too much
(like piling up troops prior to Barbarossa) and they will declare "For the Motherland"
and attack
or too few and they might take advantage tho in about half a dozen
games i have left sometimes less than 1 unit per area watching the border (about
120,000 troops total) and nothing happened. I now leave the token force (120,000)
at the border and start piling up troops a few regions back. When ready then i move
their theatre control up to the border and move them forward.

As long as you have the M-R-pact active, and enough troops on the border, they are not able to attack at all. It seems like there is a point for germany signing it now, finally (though it´s probably still better to march right on east after poland and not sign it - but who knows: might have been preferable IRL, too...).

I know exactly how to do that, was mainly suggesting that PI do it to.

I did the same thing, I had London encircled while I invaded northern part of England and when I finally took London SU instantly DOW'ed me so it seems london is a "trigger".
Gave me a heart attack when it happened, I hadn't organized *any* troops on the east front, almost everyone was stacked in Warsaw :D

my settings were normal, everything on manual. I was browsing the defines.lua this morning and saw something about 300IC being a threshold for increased threat ( if anyone can confirm or deny?), so grabbing London would have put me over that mark. is it related? I don't think so. When I checked SU pre-DoW (after the facts), it turns out they had the same "countdown" that Germany does for breaking the NAP.
so I CAN say that having more troops on the border seems to enable SU to DoW Germany.
@Jazumir: I always felt better having the West quiet before unleashing storm in the East. given Podcat's post, that seems no longer to be a possibility. that's okay, really. playing the US, for instance, by the time they get into the war, the AI always had the British isles in their pocket. These changes make for a more historic game (which is my personal preference).

This is what you stumbled upon, one of the unspecified "Gems".

Code:
elseif year < 1943 -- germany grabbed london early, backstab imo
			and (CCurrentGameState.GetProvince(1964):GetController() == gerTag)
			then
				ministerCountry:GetStrategy():PrepareLimitedWar(gerTag, 100)

It's great ain't it, now you really have to have a strategy! ....I wonder what these other "Gems" are?

right, so London IS key. I was stumbling through the files earlier, but must have overlooked it. then again, I'm no expert, just someone who can read the code.

I also have been using overrun instead of encirclement. One way of doing this is by staging attacks. Make attacks across the whole front. Use armor stacks spread out along the line. Use smaller stacks of Inf Div. The Armor stacks should win their attacks first. If you have properly lowered your attack delay by all possible methods, Your armored div will be able to move before the Inf Div win their fights. When your armor advances, split off a division to move right and left right behind the defending enemy on either side. If it times right, your Inf will win and the enemy will start to retreat into the province your armor is moving into. You can do this with infantry only but you need to delay the start of half your attacks by a day or two. The key to it is to set up a situation where your attacks are succeeding at different times and deliberately moving into the province behind a defending enemy when ever possible.

And on the subject:
I haven't seen the need for a huge number of troops to invade Britain. In my several Germany runs I have always had most of my army, including most of the Panzer divisions defending in the East. I also invest in some fortifications in the most vulnerable border provinces.
And finally: Never trust an AI. Have none of you ever seen "The Forbin Project" or "Battlestar Galactica"?

I grew up with the 80's version, but haven't gotten a real liking to the new show

Interesting. I found I much prefer the new to the old, but to each his own.

1. Grace Park. Case closed? Oh wait, she was AI too.

2. Yugoslavia does some dirty tricks too I noticed, spawning some army in the style of EU3 Scotland. And Guangxi is quite fond of flanking Japanese offensive into Nat. China if they don't feel a blade on their throat (aka border garrisons). Where else are those kinds of surprises?
