Getting a little annoyed with the way neighbour empires will declare war with the objective of humiliating one's 'empire', effectively 'come attack us and win or give us 100 influence points'. Humiliating your enemy might well be an outcome, but would it be an objective ?

I have either fought and won in these situations, or on occasion when it has constituted a potential war on a second or third front 'surrendered', effectively buying off enemies with 100 points.

I have not waited it out to see what happens if a 'war' times out with no fighting.

Perhaps humiliation should be available only to the defender, but to the aggressor ? Or should only become an option for the aggressor once the defender has had some success and they have moved from aggressor to underdog.

I'm the opposite on this. I think insults should give 1 year long humiliation CB.

What happens if a war times out with no fighting is that war exhaustion will reach 100% through attrition and either side is allowed to force white peace (and if neither side chooses this then in an endless and grim dark future you will still be at war)

You know, the attacker does not actually get 100 influence, he just causes the defender to lose 100 influence, and possibly kills the defending ruler (did this change? or is it only stagnant ascendencies that do this?)...

BUT, that actually sounds like a cool suggestion. Like, what if you decided to wage war on your neighbors just to try to steal 100 influence from them? I mean, compared to the costs of a war and what you pay for claims, its not much, sure. But it could be funny to just periodically farm weak enemies for influence, especially when you have nilistic aquisistion ascencion or barberian despoilers.

I do not write of insults. They declare war and do nothing, basically they shout chicken and hide.

Either one attacks, takes half their territory and defeats their fleet; merely to save face. With them making appeals to you for your surrender when you are close to victory.

Or you ignore the 'phoney war', presumably let it 'time out' and lose 100 points . . .

To humiliate your enemy surely you must be both underdog and defender.

I wish insults actually worked. They would be useful in forcing the enemies to declare war on you which would obligate your defensive pact partners to take part. The only time I ever use them is to try to force this outcome, and it almost never works.

Like what if part of the diplomacy expansion, insults were something that cost you influence, but had a chance of forcing enemies to go to war with you? Or maybe they could be like mini humiliates, opponent loses influence if they fail to declare war on you within a certain time period after an insult.

The diplomacy and war settlement aspects of Stellaris could certainly do with some work.

You can take territory in humiliate wars. In fact it's a great way to expand, spend some influence on claims then take them and get a 100 influence refund.
