I was fighting a rebellious count. He jumped into the fray while I was putting down a rebellion in another area, but it was a foolish move because I quickly crushed him. I noticed that he had a claim on my primary kingdom (possibly the reason he wanted to pick a fight with me to begin with), so in the peace deal I made him accept my claim as legitimate.

Shazam!

I was now playing as a different kingdom. My CoA changed, and my capital moved to the new kingdom (which happened to be within my personal demesne at the time).

Interesting.

It seems to be a bug in CK. That if you force someone to relinquish his claim on your kingdom title he gets the title instead. What happened is that you probably had two kingdom titles, and he then got your primary one, and thus you changed to the secondary.

Actually what I believe happened -- and I don't have the save file anymore, unfortunately -- is that forcing him to relinquish his claim cycled my primary kingdom title to the bottom of the list. The count definitely did not become ruler of my old kingdom. In fact, I'm certain it was still part of my personal demesne. What surprised me was that I could switch kingdoms within the game, because that has lots of repercussions for characters moving around. I don't know whether my old court dissolved or if I took it with me to the new kingdom.

Weird situation. I just know that I have previously lost the king title of Ireland to a rebelling vassal, when I forced him to relinquish his claim on my throne.

But then again I rarely force them to give up their claims on my titles, as they are normally of little threat to me, also it gives me much more Prestige to let him keep it (as long as I keep the peace score above 0).

Or you can make a simple save game edit to move the original title back as Primary:

To edit your primary title (supposing it is the Byzantine Empire) in a save-game do as follows

1. Open the save-game with Wordpad or Notepad
2. Replace all entries of GEOR with XXXX (ctrl+h)
3. Replace all entries of BYZA with GEOR
4. Replace all entries of XXXX with BYZA

Remember to only replace the entries for GEOR and not for Georgian or George or something similar. Do this by clicking on the box in the left corder when you have chosen ctrl+h in Wordpad.

I changed my kingdom once before by giving the "King of" title I wanted to my heir once my ruler was really old. Then I restarted and played as the heir until the ruler died. Or you could assassinate him or use the "die" cheat to expedite the process. ;)
