I Can't Get the Game to Work Anymore

I tried to post this on the steam forum, but I had got no response after an hour or so. Anyway, I used to play this game all the time. However, I haven't been able to get the game to work recently. Every time I click the CK2 icon or 'play' icon from my steam library page, the box with all of the CD Keys shows up fine but nothing happens after I click the 'play' button. I have tried verifying the game cache, uninstalling and re-installing the game, and I even used an AVG PC maintenance and tuneup program to help make sure that my computer wasn't being total trash. I had played the new DLC just fine for a few days, so I don't think that is the problem, although I haven't tried uninstalling it yet.

Oddly enough, I am having the exact same problem with EU4. I have uninstalled and re-installed, verified the game cache, updated drivers, turning my computer off and back on, and everything I know how to do. Just like with CK2, this game had been working fine until recently. I have no idea if it's a problem with my computer, steam, or what-have-you, but I am at an utter loss for what I should do in order to get my games working again. Any and all help is definitely appreciated, thanks in advance!

Ah hour? What kind of schedule do you think we run here?

Please try a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-EU4
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/EU4 AND Documents/Paradox/EU4
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run Steam Verify for both games when done.

Ha, sorry if I seemed a little impatient, I was just a little anxious to get the games running properly again. Anyway, I did the full clean re-install, but the games are still not working properly. I am experiencing the exact same issue. I'm kind of worried that there might be a problem with my computer. Is there any reason why all of my other games still work, but these two do not?

Certainly there's a reason, otherwise they'd be working. What that reason is, we don't know yet.

What changes occurred on your system between when these games last worked and first didn't work? Is this perhaps a different machine, or there's been a Windows re-install?

Please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the end of the "Sound devices" section for brevity) and your Documents/CK2/settings.txt. From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ directory, post system.log .

Please post your Documents/EU4/settings.txt. From your Documents/Paradox/EU4/logs/ directory, post system.log .

This is the same machine. I don't recall making any changes myself. This is the only working computer in my household, so I have no idea what my family/friends might have changed on the computer.

I don't see a settings.txt file. I see an ai, error, game, graphics, memory, message, profiling, random, setup, system, system_interface, text, and time .txt files

Did I go to the wrong place?

I think you must. This is in your MyDocuments area in Windows. Under that is a folder for Paradox Interactive, under that CK2 - settings.txt is in there - and under that is /logs/ , which is where system.log is.

I see you have a dual video system, nVidia/intel. Go into the nVidia Control Panel, 3D Settings area, and force ck2game.exe and eu4.exe to run on the "high performance" nVidia card setting, not the Intel - see if that helps.

Nope, that didn't change anything to my knowledge.

I couldn't upload the .log files directly. The paradox forum said it was an invalid file. I copied the contents into a text file, I hope that is okay. Are these the ones you were looking for? I apologize for my ignorance, I am not super tech savvy.

Is that all there is in those files? Something is really wrong, if so, they should be like 10 times that length.

Are there no settings.txt files?

May as well update both the Intel and nVidia video drivers.

But the OP here didn't reinstall Windows, so your problem is different ... and probably easy to fix:
Please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\crusader kings ii\DX\ and run dxsetup.exe
Please go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\crusader kings ii\ and run vcredist.exe

Doesn't the settings.txt file get created after u start the game for the first time? since he cant even start his game it probably hasn't been created on his system yet since his old one got deleted from his re-installs..

Yeah, I had tried setting the NVIDIA card to high settings. Nothing happened, the game still wouldn't start.

Has your Windows only recently got updated from 8 to 8.1 ?
Some threads i read had this problem when they updated Windows to 8.1.
Apparently the issue was fixed by reinstalling/updating directX, Visual++ and NET. At least that seemed to help somehow.

That's exactly what Ive been trying to establish, but there's been a series of typos and misunderstandings that's got in the way this time.

Oh, and the only things in the documents/paradox interactive/ Crusader Kings 2 area are the logs file and a dlc_signature file.

If you have at an stage manually moved your Windows Documents folder, rather than using the approved MS method, the game can't find it and this can happen. To confirm this is the problem, in the Steam/CK2 folder use Notepad to make a text file called userdir.txt . In that file just place a single dot (period, full stop) this makes the game create those user files right there instead. If that helps you can replace that dot with the actual path of your Documents folder.
