I've tried - Honestly, I've tried.

But there's no way I can reform the Germanic Faith at this point in the game.

Denmark is much more powerful than I am, I have only 1 holy site in my control, and MA is about 30-40%.

Frankly, I don't think this will ever work for me. I just might not be as good at strategy games as I thought I was...

I'm really considering not touching a PDS game ever again...

Did you want feedback, or is this just an outburst of sadness? Don't be so sad!

I reformed the Germanic Faith yesterday as not-Denmark, for what it's worth. I even took Zeeland of a fractured Frankish/Karling mess.

Who did you start as/what start/etc.? Starting as one of the not-big viking lords tends to be an uphill battle and very dependent on how many hopeless invasions your coreligionists decide to attempt. Try to raid temples. Maybe even *gasp* build some temples. Also, don't forget that the game isn't over because somebody is bigger than you. In this game in particular, playing as a vassal is a perfectly fine way to go about your business.

Tribals can build temples. Click on the empty slot and if you have the gold you can build it. Get said gold by raiding.

To raid, raise an army, select it, and press the toggle looter button. It's located between the 'split of special troops' button and the attrition indicator. This has to be done on your territory. Then either park the army on neighbours, or put them in boats and ferry them over to whatever coastal province you want to raid. The boats have to be next the province you put the troops on to raid.

Every province has a loot meter. When hostile troops are in the province, the meter goes down, which affects taxes for the owner. If you are raiding (looting is the same thing), this gets translated into gold and prestige for you. The level of fortification in the province will decrease how much of this loot is easily available. To get to protected loot you have to fully siege down the holding. This can also get you some fun events, traits and prisoners. However, the most efficient way to raid is to have a small army of about 500 troops and just go for the unprotected loot.

If you keep your troops moving, you can usually get most of the unprotected loot before the troops get to you. Having an organizer would also help you outrun any defenders. If you raid small realms (like the Papacy in the 867 start) that only have one province, the ai won't raise its troops while you are besieging its county. These make good targets for sacking. The Papacy, Venice, Amalfi and Irish minors are examples of these.

My general approach to reforming is to beeline for the holy sites in Scandinavia (either with subjugation or forged claims if necessary) and see where that takes me in terms of moral authority. If it's close, sack temples of other religions or build temples (preferably both). Most counties in Scandinavia don't have temples to start with and remember you can build in your vassals territory. If you need way more than that, look for oppurtunities to snipe Zeeland or Brunschweig (or wherever Paderborn is) via county conquest CB. This is somewhat dependent on what the Karling blob is doing and how messed up by Gavelkind it becomes. You could also try blitzing county conquests on 1pms in Finland or Britain/Ireland. Also, a successful prepared invasion will net you 10% MA IIRC. Once again, Britain is a good target for this, but make sure you can actually win it. Losing costs you 10 MA and other Catholics will likely join in to defend a coreligionist from invasion.

If all this fails, you could also just go Catholic (but stay Norse cultured!) so that you can go Feudal and get out of the hell that is Elective Gavelkind. Stay Norse so that you can continue to raid (yes, even as a feudal Catholic) and get cheap ships. Norwegian/Swedish/Danish/Norman have to pay full price for boats. If you don't get to excited about converting your provinces, courtiers and vassals, it isn't even that hard to go back to Germanic later.

Spread across Finland and burn their temples - this will increase Germanic MA (Finland is just easier than Romuva/Slavic/Christian).
Raiding is more or less like this: some units can have their raiding mode activated (an axe and a torch, crossed). When it's lit, you can raze holdings and get lots of money. However, you can only do it if the raided county has some border with any of yours.

Old Gods start gives you ships, so you can raid anywhere with them instead of just neighbor provinces (be sure to check the yellow bar on the boat - when it's filled up, it's time to go home!)

The large rivers let you use them to raid inner provinces or a faster way to the Black Sea. Merchant Republics and Bishoprics are easier than castle-main holdings.

Starting as Denmark/Sweden is way easier than others. Both already control 1 holy site; grab the Naumadal one and conquer the other big guy for all 3 in Scandinavia lands. You could prepare an invasion to Zeeland. Beware of Braunschweg, because it will trigger Crusades.

If you have Way of Life, opt for Theology focus, to get events about Piety.

I also don't understand raids very much.

Yeah, that's probably why you're having a difficult time. Raiding is key to a Germanic game.

The gist of it: when in looter mode, an army will either deposit gold in your treasury (if one of your counties borders the county your army is in), or put them into the hold of ships in an adjacent sea tile. Once your boats fill up, you need to take them back to your home territory to deposit your loot. Larger armies take gold faster, up to an army size of 500.

So, some practical advice, taking this all into account: raise some troops, and split them, as best you can, into units of 500. Set them all into raider mode and put them on your ships (raise all the ships you can, as a Norseman you get cheap ships, and the more ships, the more gold will fit). Sail over to a good raiding area and deposit the troops.

As another poster mentioned, single-county rulers are good, but to expand on this: any ruler with a number of counties less than or equal to the number of stacks you have can be a good candidate. If you pause and unload all the stacks at the same time, they'll all land on the same day and the ruler won't be able to raise any troops. Just keep an eye out for retinues, or already raised armies if the ruler is at war. You also want to pay attention to how much unguarded loot there is, you can often grab pretty good gold in larger realms with hit and run tactics.

Any realm you can fully carpet siege, it may be worth considering fully sieging down the holdings-- particularly very rich lands like Rome, Venice, etc. Ransoms are a great source of gold, and you can get good events for sieging down the holdings.

You have all the time in the world, assuming your neighbours aren't too hungry. Sending your chancellor to keep a powerful enemy at or near 100 opinion will ensure that he thinks of you last when its time to war.

With recent updates, there are also several ways that you can possibly survive long enough to reform the faith, assuming the right expansions are in use:
-Swear fealty for protection, finaggle your way into his Council, and do your part to keep him powerless to act against you.
-Marry into other religions, either for a chance at inheriting their larger realms or for non-aggression pacts.
-Force others to be your tributaries. Not only will they pay you taxes, they'll defend you in every war you have to fight until the day you die.
-Do what you can to get your prestige up. Being able to suddenly summon a ton of troops whenever needed is a boom that cannot be discounted.

Wow, I didn't expect this much feedback.

Well, anyways, through some sort of miracle, I managed to acquire 2 more holy sites within a span of the first 10 years of the game.

I feel much better now, and I'll have a video documenting (most) of what I did, It'll be on the channel on the link on my signature.
