For the sake of my dynasty and love, can you help me? I am the Emperor of the Byzantine Empire and my eldest son and heir doesn't show up in the eligible bachlor list when I go beyond the palace courtiers, who are all old. Why can I not find him on the list when I click arrange marriage beyond my courtier list? He is of age (17) and not celibate or chaste. I have tried using him, but cannot arrange beyond the court. He is young, strong and has large tracks of land (Monty Python and the Holy Grail). He even takes a bath once a week, whether he needs it or not. So if you have any ideas, I would greatly appreciate any you care to express. Love potions, kidnapping princesses, what ever, I'll pay in giving you a countdom in Cherson.

Basil Konstantine Emperor of the Byz. Empire.

Click the double ring icon beside his portrait. Do not try and arrange marriage in the diplomacy menu, that will just show you available courtiers in your realm.

I cannot find a double ring on the around the portrait.

Are you sure he's in your court? Is he landed? You can't decide on marriages for landed characters, they make their own decisions regarding that. (Though if you invite the woman you would like to marry him to to your court, you can then propose to him that he marry her, and he might say yes.)

That is no doubt what happened as the computer married him off to an oaf in a dress. Sigh I guess the fifth generation of the dynasty will have an idiot on the throne. Thanks for the advice and information. You are now count of Cherson.

Why of course, as the Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, I can do whatever I wish. Well, as long as the factions don't rebel or someone proclaims a pretender, or those blasted Muslim invade. Infact, I hereby grant you the Duchy of Athens. I am sure you will be a more loyal servant of the state, than the current holder of the duchy.

Thank you very much, Basileus. Although, be careful, I've been known to grow beyond the power of my liege, the ERE Emperor, and become independent... after ruining the Empire from the inside :D

You can't control your heir's marriage if he's landed or not at your court. By the way, these are the things you need to pay attention when marrying your male heir:

1) Keep him at your court before he's married. He might not respect betrothal you arrange for him before being given a title! Don't give him any titles before you've found him a wife. In fact, I don't ever give my heir any titles. That way I can have full control of his children's education.

2) You will, logically, want to marry your heir to a female of condition - so that his heir would inherit both of his parents' lands. Great care though - if your realm's succession law is different from your heir's wife's, different children may inherit and that will be all lost labour...

Secondly, and very importantly - if you marry your unlanded heir to a lady with a title - he will immediately move to her court, no longer giving you the control of his children. If he's landed prior to marriage, they will both stay at each one's courts.

3) Probably the most important - if you arrange a betrothal between your heir and a landed lady, and make it patrilinear, she will, when asking you to marry, upon becoming of age ask for a matrilinear marriage, and vice versa. Therefore, make sure you read the fine print in the offered marriage contract!

You can still ask a vassal for specific ward or yourself to any kids in his court, about foreign courts i'm currently not sure to say.

Why of course, as the Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire, I can do whatever I wish.
Yet your authority is nothing compared to the power of love. :p

I will endorse VOA's - beg your pardon - Duke VOA's advice, with the emphasis on keeping the lovebirds (at least the one in your family) in your court where you can force them to take the friend, lover and soulmate you have chosen for them. There have been far too many cousin marriages among the earls in my family, I am becoming very worried about what the next reunion portrait will look like with all those Hapsburg lips and asymmetrical faces.

My personal preference though is to marry for traits and conquer for land, those inheritance laws are tricky and I always seem to come up on the short end of the stick. As Empress of Britannia I currently have some rather untidy business with the King of France I keep putting off as we get along famously, and would forever if I could just keep his Dukes from flinging their seed all over the daughters of my Counts.

As far as betrothal, I have read of so many troubles here on the forum I don't even bother to use it. :(
