If that applies to everything you read on the Internet and not just threads about Steam, then you might want to get your blood pressure checked.
From these threads, I have learned that games distributed through Steam do not always have to use Steamworks (and Paradox games do not). Nevertheless, that is not enough to get me to consider using Steam. In terms of intrusiveness, Ubisoft DRM is worse than Steam with Steamworks is worse than Steam without Steamworks is worse than GamersGate. Does that hierarchy of preferences make me a blind fanatic?
It does annoy me. That and overly emotional displays D:
You would be suprised, people still seem shocked that paradox has steam DRM turned off (it sure suprised me when i found it was possible)

I've been doing some thinking. I was going to give Magicka a go through Steam, using it as a trial of both the game and of the Steam system. I've gone as far as opening an account and downloading the Steam client, but haven't bought anything there yet. Sadly, a check shows that my graphics card isn't suitable.
You see, Paradox have spoiled me, and Matrix don't do Steam at all.
I've already got Paradox's current internal titles. The remaining ones don't really entice me. Neither does Magicka, to be honest, as it's primarily multiplayer, (but hey, it's cheap!)
So what am I going to do? I'm going to wait until February, and buy Crusader Kings II through Steam. I figure I've got little to lose; it's highly likely that it'll be available through GamersGate as well so if it all goes to pot or I find I simply don't like the system, I can buy it through them and show support to Paradox that way as well.
Or does anyone know of another Strategy title that's as freely editable as Paradox's ones, available through Steam and not stupidly graphics-hungry? :unsure:

Arsenal of Democracy is available via Steam - that game is based on HoI2, so HW requirements are very low.
Post specs of your PC and we can tell you if its reasonably usable for current games.
Btw.: recently it was possible to play Magicka entire wekend via Steam for free.

In general, I've realized the following from Johan's posts:
1. Steam will not be exclusive. GG will receive a release.
2. Steamworks DRM will not be utilized.
3. Steam will be needed to install the game, but, AFAICT, it will not be needed to run it. I mean, I think you'll need Steam installed, but you won't need to run the game through Steam itself. I know that there is the post of Johan saying you'll need Steam to run it, but I think this is all he really meant. In other posts, he and other Paradox commentators are pretty clear that you won't need to run it through Steam.
4. Basically, all that is -really- happening is that, if you want access to beta patches, you need Steam. Otherwise, little will change.
This is assuming that Johan hasn't shifted positions or begun to contradict himself over time.

Only relevant PC spec is the graphics card - NVidia GeForce 8400GS, which (to your last point) isn't quite up to Magicka.

You can buy much more powerfull (used) GPU under 50 bucks
If you want to try Steam, wait till December 19th or 20th when their monster Xmas sale is supposed to start.

Presumably, given its placement, the 'positive' misconception that there will be a GG version not getting corrected- when the best that has been stated is that there may be- and something 'negative' like needing steam running permanently getting corrected near instantly by devs.

Regarding Phystarstk's #3 above: You could uninstall Steam if you liked, although you would need to reinstall it for patching. Seems like a hassle though.

Status update: Steam installed, loaded up Galactic Civilizations II, run it for a bit, then went offline, all seems fine.
Well, GalCiv is underwhelming, but I will persevere with it.
I'll load up the demo of Magicka tonight, and see how it goes.
I'll only upgrade the video if/when Paradox's mainline titles force me to. Graphic eye-candy is NOT a high priority for me - as I've said before Redmond Simonsen was my Graphics God, and for me the HOI2 map & graphics were more than adequate. But thanks for the idea.
I'll buy CK2 from Steam if I have to, but I'd prefer GG. And I'll probably skip any new Steam only titles after that.
I just hope, Magna Mundi wont force me to use that adware program since i really want to buy that game. As long as Steam are forced on me, i better start checking matrixgames releases instead.... :huh:
