Perhaps not for games in general, but when it comes to Paradox games I think so. This year 95% of sales has been digital, and boxes cost a lot to manufacture and distribute, so I think we're approaching a point where boxed games just aren't profitable anymore.
That's borderline trolling - don't blatantly ask such a provocative question. Some just don't, move on - "this is not the thread you're looking for."

I'd like to point out that:
1: Steam is not a publisher - just a distribution platform/marketing platform - there's a significant difference. Comparing a Steam distribution contract to a publishing contract is like comparing taking an aspirin and going in for surgery.
2: This statement, in my opinion, is not true for all developers. Tripwire is big gang - we get dozens of requests from smaller devs who ask "Can you get us on steam" - since Steam, as well, is closing the door somewhat to smaller devs.
3: Retail is dead for PC as we know it. Has been for a long time, what you're experiencing now is the natural buildup of gases in the corpse that give the illusion of life.

There is too many "15 seconds" work if you have Steam. Its not worth it IMO. I buy games for entertinment, not putting looots of "15 seconds of work"....
How long did it take you to register on the forum?
Honestly people, we're grasping at straws here. What if you forget your username/password? Either pick something you can actually remember or write it down and keep it in a safe place (Maybe you'll lose it? Maybe you would lose your CD). You might as well argue it's impossible to use a debit card because you might forget your PIN, or say you should never own a car because if you lose your keys you won't be able to start it. You can invent all sorts of scenarios where X becomes impossible if Y happens, but it surely applies equally to everything, no?
If you really dislike Steam: Do not use it. You'll likely miss out on some games, but CK2 has a non-Steam version.

In the end, for a customer the issue about steam and its derivates culminates in one central point:
Give up liberty and receive convenience for it.
There are severe asymmetries of power when it comes to the computer game industry, so other protagonists control how both items will be weighted.
How much every customer is willing to sacrifice is a personal question, and probably closely related to the trust they have in these protagonists.
As for me, I need none of steam's conveniences. I could live with using WON in 2011. But it was not up to me to decide how things should be. I was given the choise: love it or leave it.
I take my part and the responsibility associated with it. For now, I avoid steam when I can. I keep my support as low as possible.
Will I buy CK2 if it is steam-only?
Yes. Because I have trust in Paradox and enough trust in Valve.
Would I buy it if it was on Origin, UbiLauncher or BattleNet 2.0?
No. Because I do not trust EA or Ubisoft, and I do no longer have enough trust in Activision-Blizzard.
I believe I understand the people who like steam. I believe I understand the people who dislike steam. I will not question either stance.
But I want that everyone knows and takes the responsibility for his actions.
I live in a country that has learned the lesson for failing to do so. The hard way. Twice.
I heed the warnings.

I did it ONCE and got lots of helpful information by doing it. With Steam i get a adware infection and it constantly have issues. Last time i forgot to go "offline" after a patch update so i couldnt play the game i purchesed in 5 hour when i was travelling in a train. A registration is just a registration, it doesnt constantly harrass you and force you 25 second all the time while you play your game....
Neither does Steam. But I can see little things like "facts" aren't going to stop you, obviously someone who doesn't use Steam knows a lot more about how it works than people who do.

It makes sure
a) people get latest patch when starting.
b) we can actually go to print in time, as steam needs activation to run, and focus on the online 1.0 version for early feb.
the alternative is NO boxed version.

Although perhaps since you don't know how it works, you should stop telling people all the bad things it does? Your argument now boils down to "I don't know anything about it, but I badmouth it anyway".
No, he means Steam itself is adware (because it has adverts, like your tv or radio is adware!), not that it gives you adware.

It cuts our costs.
It increases our margins.
It makes development work easier.
It allows us to make better games - by providing devs with better metrics
It allows us to make better/more sensible DLC/expansions
It makes marketing efforts easier.
It makes sales efforts easier.
It makes publishing (analysis etc etc) easier.
It allows us to do more games with less resources.
It makes piracy a non-issue (even more than today)
It eliminates second hand sales.
There are are, as far as I know, not a single long term benefit of staying in the non-online space.
What you have to realize that content is king - meaning that the actual device you're on will be of less and less importance. More or less all major games will be played in a browser online in 5-10 years - the actual device tv/computer/phone/tablet/Microwave - won't make a difference.

Currently Steam, but there's no reason why other similar online options shouldn't have the same benefits.
