Well as austria I was getting crowned HRE pretty frequently and when I wasn't Spain was. So, I'm elected HRE again in the late 1500's and decades later I'm almost sure I'll be elected again because my monarch is getting old. Then he dies soon after and before I can celebrate something strange happens. Cologne declares independence form a massive Hessen and is elected HRE! I'm guessing they were elected because there relations with protestants were at nuettral since they just declared independence and everyother catholic nation had pretty bad relations with protestants. As a Hapsburg nation It wasn't worth it to send state gift after state gift to those unruly northern nations since I have a bonus, but Still I doubt no one else has had Cologne become HRE in their game.

Cologne as HRE??? That would have created some loyalty difficulties as the elector of Cologne was the Archbishop of said city. The pope would crown his subordinate as Emperor... funny *g*

And guess where all of it would take place! In the beautiful imperial city of Aachen! (See my location...) :)
(Until 1562, that is, after that emperors were coronated in Frankfurt  )

I saw the duke of Siebenbürgen elected once, after Austria annexed her way to the bottom of the popularity league. :)

Genoa is a pretty good HRE, if u can manage to keep the throne, u'll rake in 50 points ever two years or so just by sitting on the throne. :D

The weirdest I have seen was an AI Aedh XVI* of Eire as HRE. Of course, there weren't all that many Catholic countries left at that point (Eire, France, and Sardinia), so it must have been by default. You could probably get a NAm Indian ruler as HRE the same way.
