Hi all,
so, even if I had purchased SoI since it came out, I never seriously played a muslim character, I played most of my games/playthroughs in Italy, Britain and in the Byzantine Empire. So, I decided to give a go to the Muslims and I decided to recreate the Umayyad dynasty in Iberia with the Ruler Designer.
After a pretty successful game opening, where I created Andalusia within 30 game-years of play, at some point I actually had the option to revive the Umayyad Caliphate in Spain. However, it must either be a bug or I don't know what, since for historical accuracy reasons I chose my characters not to have the 'Sayyid' trait and hence the only way for them to become Caliph was to control the Holy Cities or the historical capitals of Islam. In fact this is what the following screenshot says: that I own Mecca, Medina, Baghdad, Damascus and Cairo.

The problem is: my realm is confined to Spain. How can this be possible? The only thing that happened to make a difference is that the Abbasid Caliphate was destroyed, but in no way I got even remotely close to control those places. I'm not posting it in the bug section as I'm pretty sure there is something I am missing here from the description of the tooltip and the actual requirements.
...
Another thing. I am giving up this game because the Pope inevitably calls a crusade for Andalusia no matter what after Jerusalem has been taken, Sicily and Greece were left untouched, and so on. I realize I should expand outside Iberia as soon as possible if I want to survive as a Muslim dynasty starting as a OPM in Iberia. It's probably easier to do well as a Christian OPM in Spain, for after the initial uphill struggle, everything becomes easier, especially now that there are no more stupid Jihads for Aragon and Galicia at least so early in game. Instead for muslims the game becomes more difficult as it goes on, as the holy orders are there, then the Mongols come and battles themselves become more difficult because catholic pikemen- and knights-heavy armies are not super-easy to match, I have noticed that I need huge numerical or tactical advantages to win battles.
At some point I want to re-try this game to see if a strategy in which I expand outside Spain as quickly as I can is more viable to make me 'win'. Any other idea?
P.S. I am not playing with Sunset Invasion.
