Yes I am fully aware that they wont be able to contribute much as they didn't historically as well...
yes I know there is no reason for me to ask them but out of pure curiosity, are there I-400 Submarines for Japan?

(I am not asking for them to be added if not in-game its just a question calm down seriously... the latest threads are kinda filled with hate for almost about anything for some reason)

This question actually was asked several times and podcat already mentioned that it wont be in. Podcat stated that he thinks that modding would support them, tho.

they arent in the tech tree. although I think modding supports it technically

In theory you would only need to give the submarine an "deckspace" of 2 or 3. Their significance in the game is highly doubtfull of course.

If it's easy enough to mod in, I'll likely try and squeeze them into the naval mod I'm putting together. Got to wait and see how it works, and whether the AI would use them sensibly though.

Any chance you might also mod in the USS Constitution in Boston Harbor as a frigate? In 1931 she was recommission (which was extended to permanent commission in early 1940) and returned from an around-the-world journey in 1934, to Boston Harbor, where she's been ever since.

I figure she should be added into the game since she was an actively commissioned, combat-capable (thanks to her cannons) warship in the US Navy within the game's time frame? If your mod adds frigates, then Constitution could be the US's only class of those, if possible without an option to build any more. If we were to get a bit more serious with the idea, it'd be neat if she had 0s or 1s for stats across the board, but had a significant amount of national morale/war exhaustion tied to her to avoid people simply sacrificing her.

Hahaha, well I hadn't thought about it up until now (my main interest was in units that actually fought and had a chance of making a significant impact in the war - no offence intended to the Constitution), and I doubt there's anything in the game to model the effect of weather on a sailing ship (the injustice!). I could maybe mod in a UK national focus to accelerate the restoration of the HMS Victory, and then the two of them could have a go at it to settle any wars between the US and UK :). It wouldn't be a frigate, as a frigate during the period was broadly the equivalent of a US DE (I just looked it up then, and the US classified it as an IX, or "unclassified miscellaneous vessel", and it looks like its main wartime use was as a brig for officers awaiting court-martial), and its role was much closer to an accommodation ship (which I wasn't planning to cover). It's only wartime combat that I can see is a ramming attack on the DD Ralph Talbot ;).

That said, if it doesn't look like it'll clutter up things I can't see any harm in it, but it's unlikely to be a priority, and I've got a list that's fairly long (although subject to a fair bit of change, given we don't know the whole game design yet), so I'll chuck it on there and see what happens :).

If it's a brig, then you might be underestimating its combat capability. As Chesty Puller once said, "Take me to the brig, I want to see the real marines!"

More seriously, though, since the US didn't use "frigate" as a classification for any ships over the game's time frame, that's where I got the idea for having the US frigate be the Constitution: having been built as a frigate, she was the only "frigate" in commission in the US Navy at the time.

In my specific case, things get VERY interesting when you learn that Boston Harbor was going to be the staging area for the Halifax theater of War Plan Red. "Hey, Constitution, are you ready to fight the British yet again? It'll be just like old times!"

Best not to get too excited, but I'm keen to get in every kind of fighting ship if it will work with the AI and the UI. I can't see why a handful of big subs wouldn't work with the UI, and I expect we'll be able to give plane space to anything that floats if we're crazy enough, but the trick'll be making the sub use its planes sensibly, and some kind of recovery modelling (maybe the sub has lower hiding value for an hour while it's recovering or something, to simulate the added risks it faced).

Sorry guys, I just have to throw in on that comment about Constitution being used mostly as an accomodation ship.

So was Yamato

(and it might be fun to see which comes out in a one-on-one between Constitution & an I-400)

I'm pretty sure Constitution, with a crew using rifles & such would be able to fight-off an I-400's air wing and be easilly capable of sinking it with her guns whil recovering aircraft.

Keep dreaming Big Nev --- as everybody knows --- only the silliest IJN commander would ever place an I-400 downwind of the USS Constitution.
Nor would they try to bomb it --- such a gross act would only inflame the US population into greater war frenzy....
