Chapter 8.6 - July 1943

The situation in the north of Italy is much better than the one in the south and a number of Italian divisions have been surrounded in Livorno and Empoli. The Italians could attempt a naval evacuation like the Hungarians further south but with the Mediterranean now ruled by the Hungarian navy it would almost certainly be a disaster.

On the 2nd of July, the Hungarian navy orders some more battleships. Although Hungary's fleet has so far done a grand job they still have the US navy and the Japanese navy to contend with. Seven of the new ships will most likely form a third battleship fleet whilst the remaining four will be shared out between the two transport fleets. This will enable the transport fleets to act independently without the need to be twinned with one of the main fleets as they will now each have four of their own battleships with them.
There is a further reason for building these ships and that is that Hungary has loads of spare IC and not much it can do with it due to the current low manpower levels.

In Malaya, victory in Gunung Tapis has forced what is left of the southern British pocket into just the one province, Gunung Mandi Angin. This province is attacked on the afternoon of the 3rd of July by three Hungarian divisions. Although the British also have three divisions present as well as more currently retreating to Gunung Mandi Angin only one British division is in any sort of fighting shape, the misnamed 54th Inf Brigade. The British are completely surrounded and also have to contend with regular bombing from the Hungarian air force and therefore should not be able to hold out for too long.

As well as fighting in Malaya against the British and in Italy against the Italians Hungary is also busy fighting the Belgians in Angola. The first battle in this campaign is actually against a South African militia division now fighting under the British flag in Serpa Pinto. This battle ends in a Hungarian victory in the afternoon of the 4th of July and the eventual occupation of Serpa Pinto will give Hungary an additional angle of attack on the Belgian VP province of Nova Lisboa.
Meanwhile, work is completed on the formation of five (four shown, one has already been placed) new anti partisan divisions destined for Western Europe. These will be used to form France Hadtest, Netherlands Hadtest, Germany Hadtest, Italy Hadtest and the Western Europe Army Group. They will eventually have all the coastal garrison divisions placed under them.

Although the troops haven't yet arrived in Serpa Pinto, an attack is launched against the Belgian infantry division and HQ in Nova Lisboa. The battle is over immediately when it is found that the Belgian formations only exist on paper and currently do not have a single soldier actually assigned to either one. All that is now required to force Belgium to capitulate is for Nova Lisboa to be occupied.

On the 8th of July, design improvements for Hungary's interceptors are announced with the development of single engine aircraft armament and airframes. These two projects will now be switched to the development of small fuel tanks and aero engines.

A few days later and Hungary's interceptor force receives another boost with the completion of two new squadrons of interceptors. This means that all four interceptor wings now consist of three squadrons each.
Meanwhile, in Malaya, the bloody battle of Bertam has finished meaning that the British are now pushed back into three individually isolated provinces and the final operations to destroy them can get under way. The southern most of these operations has actually be ongoing for a little while and should soon be over with the battle percentage now at 84%.

Two hours later and the battle for Taiping starts. As with the battle for Gunung Mandi Angin there are a few British divisions present but only one of them is actually in fighting shape which should mean that it is a comfortable victory in the end for the Hungarians. Only two Hungarian divisions launch the attack but a third will join the battle in a few hours time.

Back in Italy, with X Állandó Hadsereg now completely evacuated, all the focus is on the northern front. The Livorno pocket has now been destroyed and 2. Hadtest is now attacking along the whole length of the front. At the westernmost end of the front, the Hungarians have reached the outskirts of Roma but aren't yet strong enough to launch an assault on the Italian capital.

On the morning of the 13th of July, British resistance in Gunung Mandi Angin collapses and the British attempt to retreat into a Hungarian held province. This is futile because they will be forced to fully surrender when Hungarian force manage to occupy Gunung Mandi Angin as they are unable to attack a province (as retreating into an enemy held province effectively is) when they are out of supply.

The 17th of July brings with it three pieces of new. Firstly, that Japan and Germany have signed a non-aggression pact with each other. From previous experience I guess this means that the German government headed to Japan when they went into exile a few months back.
The second piece of news is that six new infantry divisions have been completed. These will form XXV Állandó Hadsereg, the final corps that will bring the first of the 2nd Army Group's armies, 5. Hadtest, up to full strength.
Finally, Nova Lisboa has been occupied by troops of 5. gyaloghadosztály meaning that Belgium have now reached a 100% surrender progress and that the Hungarian troops in south west Africa can now start leaving this area of operations.

As expected, at midnight on the 18th of July, Belgium surrenders and is annexed. This means that the only foreign troops left in Africa are the Italians in Ethiopia and Libya. Once Italy is conquered, Hungary will own the whole continent.
Over in Asia, the final British pocket in Kota Bharu has now been attacked by the encircling Hungarians. With seven divisions against just the one British division, victory is pretty much assured for the Hungarians who can then concentrate on the British presence further north on the Burmese border.

In the evening of the following day, the British in both Taiping and Kota Bharu surrender leaving Hungary in complete control of the southern half of the Malayan peninsula. One of the two corps involved in this area will travel overland northwards but the other will be picked up by the Hungarian navy and will land just behind the British lines on the Burmese border.

On the morning of the 20th of July, X Állandó Hadsereg make another attempt to land behind the Italian lines, though this time the landings in Macerata and Ascoli Piceno are much closer to the main front and are designed to enable the encirclement of a portion of the Italian army on the eastern part of the front. Despite the Italians having lost over half of their army in recent months they are still putting up a brave fight as the Hungarian casualty figures from the battle of Cortona show. Hopefully for the Hungarians, the Italians won't be able to fight for much longer.

On the 23rd of July, development of new medium tank engines is completed. Although this technology is not quite up to date, it is now at 1940 levels, the same as Hungary's light tanks, research in this field is discontinued.
In its place, seven new research projects are started. The Hungarian army has become concerned that they are losing a lot of troops to attrition as well as to wounds that shouldn't really be fatal. As a result, six of the new research projects have been started to address these concerns, desert, jungle, arctic and mountain warfare equipment as well as first aid and combat medicine. The final new project is the development of night fighting equipment. Although this final tech is being developed ahead of time, it is a 1944 tech, it will lose this malus on the 1st of January 1944 and should actually finish its development shortly afterwards rather than the current July date given.

A good portion of the remnants of the Italian army have now been encircled in Perugia and Fabriano and will shortly be destroyed. The Italian defense of their homeland is now starting to crumble and Hungarian strategists believe that the fighting should all be over before the end of the summer.

On the 29th of July an advance is made in radar technology but as this is not yet good enough to allow further development of ship radar and asw devices, research is continued on to the next level.
Meanwhile, in the Far East, III Állandó Hadsereg have been landed just behind the British lines on the Burmese border. They promptly launch an attack on Bokpyin to relieve IV Állandó Hadsereg to their north but unfortunately, due to Yunnan, IV Állandó Hadsereg are unable to help in this attack due to being out of supply.

On the final day of July, the attack on the Italian capital, Roma, is launched by four divisions from VI Állandó Hadsereg. Despite the urban terrain the Hungarians are confident that this force can take the city as they have a four to one advantage, but even so further forces are heading around to the south and east of Roma to completely cut the Italians off and seal their fate.

YAY!!! Glory to Hungary! Im wondering where my massed armoured divisions are...

Sitting around in Poland keeping an eye on the Soviets

i'm not suprised the belgians can't do anything, they get something like 2 manpower a month, and thats when they have their mainland provinces too.

Yeah, I wasn't overly surprised, just a tad disappointed.

Italy seems to be preforming way better than Germany, could this be a tiny bit ahistoric? :D
Ahistoric? Nah, nothing ahistoric about this AAR

Well, Germany's border with Hungary was basically devoid of troops...

That's not Hungary's fault.;)

Yeah, the Germans did kind of make a mess of things. They just got far too caught up in chasing the bear.

Chapter 8.7 - August to September 1943

The morning of the 7th of August saw the end of the battle of Roma with victory going to Hungary. Meanwhile the bulk of the Hungarian army in Italy had bypassed the Italian capital and pushed further south. By this time there was very little in the way of resistance in their way. The front however was rather narrow for the five Hungarian corps involved in Italy and they kept getting in each others way. As a result Hungarian strategists started thinking up ways that the available troops could be better put to use.

The next day, two of the army's doctrines were updated, operational level organisation and central planning. The first of these two doctrines is now fully up to date and research is therefore switched to large front whilst the second doctrine still has some way to go and is continued.

Finally, the battle of Skaidi is over. I've double checked and I have found that I was incorrect with my previous statement that this battle started in November '41, it actually started in February '42. Still, it's lasted for one and a half years yet has only resulted in 29 Hungarian casualties. The Norwegians are attempting to retreat to the north west but thankfully they are beaten to their destination and a second battle is not required. The divisions that had been assigned to help Finland Hadtest deal with their uprising are now free to take up their positions on the front line with the Soviets.

At midnight on the 11th of August, Norway surrenders to Hungary for a second time and is annexed for a second time. Hopefully this time they will stay annexed. In other news, Hungarian scientists have announced two new breakthroughs, one in the tactical command structure doctrine, the other in medium tank guns. As the Hungarian high command is not satisfied with either of these two new developments, further work is continued.

They are however happy with the three breakthroughs announced the following day. Medium tank armour and reliability aren't quite up to date but they are now at the same level as their light tank counterparts and are therefore not considered to be priorities. Tactical air command is still way behind being up to date but then so are all the other air doctrines and hence research is shifted towards the port strike tactics doctrine.

With Hungarian forces tripping over each other in Italy, the Hungarian high command enacts a new plan to land troops behind the Italian lines, not that the Italians actually have any lines left. Neither do they have much of anything behind their lines and hence the landings in Sicily are completed without any problems and the troops are soon able to start pushing into the Sicilian interior.

Two days later and a second set of landings take place around the major Italian port of Taranto. Again there is no opposition put up by the Italians and the landings are straightforward. An Italian fleet is found in Taranto's harbour but it only consists of transport flotillas which somehow manage to get safely out of port despite the Hungarian battleships lurking offshore.

At midnight on the 15th of August it is clear to the Italians that it is all but over and the Italian government flees into exile. Italian governors in Libya and Ethiopia hand over control to Hungary as they also do on the Italian mainland however one area of Italian control remains in their hands, Yemen and the area around Aden.

On the 18th of August, as news is received of the latest two extensions of the ongoing program to improve the air bases in Hispaniola, Hungarian technicians complete work on three infantry upgrades, small arms, support and anti tank weapons. The infantry small arms are now fully up to date and research is switched to militia small arms whilst the other two infantry techs are continued on to the next level.

The army gains a another boost as a further raft of improvements are announced the following day with the latest upgrade to infantry light artillery as well as the development of marine, airborne and mountain infantry. Light artillery, like support and anti tank weapons, is continued on to the next level whilst work is started to improve any marine or airborne forces by researching airborne and amphibious warfare equipment.
With all these new upgrades to Hungary's armed forces the upgrade cost that Hungary is now having to pay is over 125 IC though thankfully this can be covered fairly easily.

The 19th of August is a good day for the Hungarian army as they also hear of two victories against the British in the Far East in the battles of Khura Buri and Bokpyin. These victories are important as they not only reduce the British presence to three provinces but also mean that all Hungarian forces in the area now have access to supplies and ensure that they are now longer at risk of being destroyed.

On the 21st of August, 13 new garrison divisions are completed, a 14th would follow the next day. These will cover the Atlantic, Channel and North Sea ports from Lisboa to Copenhagen that Hungary gained with the surrenders of Portugal and Germany. I have however miscounted the number of divisions required and work is started on another division as I had failed to realise that Kiel also required a garrison.

The following day and another new technology is researched, naval strike tactics, and is changed to naval air targeting in the research queue. Air doctrines are all quite far behind despite Hungary currently having 35 research projects ongoing. Hungary could increase this number as they have over 23 leadership points assigned to officer training but I still believe that officer ratio is Hungary's best friend. Even at the current rate of almost 212 per day it would take roughly five months to reach the goal of a 200% ratio.

The last series of battles against the British in the Far East have now started with attacks being launched against the British positions in Phet Buri and Prachuap Khiri Khan. Each of the three British province is still well defended by three divisions each in good fighting shape but it is hoped that the offshore naval support and the constant bombing raids by the air force will be enough to swing the battles in Hungary's favour.

With three corps surrounding the Manchu positions in the Maginot line and with the third recently deployed corps now having reached full organisation the Hungarian armed forces are now ready to do something about removing the Manchu presence. The first stage of the operation is to bomb the local infrastructure to smithereens as well as to destroy the air base and the anti air emplacements.
The bombing of Metz reveals a total of 29 Manchu militia brigades as well as the presence of a large Japanese air force including four interceptor squadrons, five tactical bomber squadrons and two naval bomber squadrons. Thankfully, probably due to lack of fuel, the Japanese planes make no attempt to interrupt the Hungarian bombing mission.

Later that day a second Hungarian tactical wing runs a mission over next door Cattenom revealing another 33 Manchu militia brigades. Again, the infrastructure will be completely destroyed before any land attacks take place.

At the very end of August six new destroyer flotillas are completed for the navy. Three of these are assigned to the 2nd Battleship Fleet which brings them back up to full strength whilst the other three are assigned to the Baltic Fleet meaning that they also have the full complement of destroyers. With more battleships under construction and the high likelihood of more destroyer losses in the future another ten flotillas are commissioned.

An hour later and the first attack on the Manchu positions is launched. This first attack is on the province of Metz as the Hungarians have more angles to attack Metz from than they do against Cattenom. Considering that there is a level 10 land fort in Metz, the 31% battle score for Hungary is a good start to the battle and should hopefully result in a victory.

By the 9th of September the British presence in the Far East has been reduced to just the one province following victories in the battles for Phet Buri and Prachuap Khiri Khan. The battle for Phet Buri especially has been expensive for the Hungarian army but it does mean that the remaining British forces have been deprived of access to a port and are therefore no longer able to receive supplies. The final battle to remove the British in Hua Hin is now underway.
Meanwhile, the navy has received a boost with news of the latest upgrade to their destroyer anti aircraft armament. This technology is now up to date and further research into the area has therefore been suspended.

Eight days later, on the 17th of September, the battle for Hua Hin is over and the British annihilated. Compared to the previous two battles in this area, Hungarian casualties have been light and the Hungarian army can now concentrate on taking Burma back from Yunnan.

It looks like you've even found the manpower to finally reinforce your battered armies! :)

Technically, you would hardly need to garrison Kiel, as it can only be accessed from the North Sea if one could pass Copenhagen. I doubt the Russians would try and land in Kiel, I suspect they'd be much too surprised to mount anything like a effective defense.

How did the occupation of Italy influence your manpower etc? Are you researching the techs to gain more manpower and lose less men?

No stopping the mighty Hungarian steamroller.:D

I certainly hope not. The Soviets may try, but I think they will fail. The problem will be the US. They currently have 2800 infantry brigades, all of which are fully re-inforced. I've not seen the problem of the US running out of mp that others have experienced. Interestingly enough, I loaded up an oldish save with Italy to discover that they had over 1000mp in their last months. Germany on the other hand was short by almost 800mp hence their problem with half strength divisions.

It looks like you've even found the manpower to finally reinforce your battered armies! :)

They weren't battered, most were fine, some were a bit short however, but yes, they are all back to full strength.

Regarding Kiel, you would be right in HOI2, Copenhagen blocks access to Kiel from the North Sea, however it doesn't in HOI3 (it does however block access to ports further east). Indeed it is not the Russians I am worried about, it is the Allies and as they can get at Kiel I would like to guard it.

I'm not sure of the exact numbers, unlike the early conquests it has become a bit harder to work out exactly what was captured from where.
However, the totals are now 94.3 manpower per month, 58.39 leadership, 220 base IC and 390 effecctive IC.
And yes, I am currently researchimg the first aid and anti-attrition techs.

Yes, you need to garrison Kiel in HoI3, the holding denmark doesn't stop landings there, but like you said, stops landings further into the baltic. And its not the soviets he's worried about i'd guess. One division would be enough to hold off an american landing of 10 divisions, for a while. whereas if they could just land, he'd need 10 of his own divisions to just contain them.

Yep, one division in Kiel should give me time to get my navy there to deal with any attempted landings.

Could we get a world map in the near future? :)

Yeah I'm dying to see a fresh world map too. Nice AAR.

Welcome to my AAR Khahan. I'll get a map up at the end of my next update.

Chapter 8.8 - September to October 1943

By the morning of the 19th of September, operations against Yunnan were able to start. V Állandó Hadsereg would begin by attacking Yunnan in Tavoy before continuing up the coast whilst III and IV Állandó Hadseregs would move to Phet Buri to await transportation by sea up to the Rangoon and Chittagong areas.

Hungary currently has some spare manpower and on the 22nd of September a decision was made as to how best to use this manpower. Hungarian high command has decided it would like to have a special forces army and hence has commissioned two marine divisions, two mountain divisions, two airborne divisions as well as an infantry division for the army HQ. Eventually there will be at least a corps of each of the three branches of special forces, maybe even two corps of mountain and marines.

It hasn't taken long to break through Yunnan's first line of defense in Tavoy and V Állandó Hadsereg are now able to push forward. No doubt they will end up chasing 136. Bubing Shi most of the way up the Burmese coast before they are able to encircle or overrun them.

On the 24th of September Hungarian doctrinal specialists come up with improvements to both the schwerpunkt and the blitzkrieg doctrines. At the moment the Hungarian armoured army is just sitting around in Poland not doing much but nevertheless research will continue in both these areas.
Meanwhile, the Baltic Fleet has been ordered to re-base to Athina which involves a dash through the English Channel. In the afternoon they are spotted and engaged, but not by the Royal Navy as expected but by a group of Kriegsmarine submarines. This is in fact the first time that the Hungarian and German navies have clashed and the Germans get the worst of the meeting, losing 29. Unterseebootsflottille. The Baltic Fleet only have to contend with a later attempt by the British to attack them from the air but they eventually make it to Athina unscathed. In Athina they pick up six transport flotillas from the Reserve Fleet and are subsequently renamed the 2nd Transport Fleet. This fleet now has the same complement as the 1st Transport Fleet, 2 battleships, 2 light cruisers, 3 destroyers and 11 transport flotillas.

The 29th of September brings news from Hungary's laboratories that there has been a breakthrough in Hungary's supply production technology. Although this is not yet up to date Hungary is not exactly short of supplies currently and it is decided not to pursue this field of research for a while.
Later that morning the battle of Metz draws to a close with a victory for the Hungarians over the Manchurians. Due to the large enemy presence and their fortified positions the battle has been fairly costly for Hungary with over 4000 casualties.

Undeterred by the level of casualties in Metz, 5. Hadtest immediately launch an attack against the remaining Manchu forces in Cattenom. Once these positions have been annihilated the troops from 5. Hadtest can be freed up to do something else.

At the end of the month, IV Állandó Hadsereg complete their landings around Rangoon. Their aim in this area is to retake the provinces around Rangoon, relieving the garrison there but also to destroy Yunnan's divisions in the area. As such their first objective is to complete an encirclement of Yunnan's local forces.
Back in Hungary, scientists have announced that they have improved the armament on twin engine aircraft. As a result, they start a new project, to further enhance twin engine airframes.

With the start of October, Hungary's military receives a new set of draftees. These are immediately put into training as seven new infantry divisions are commissioned. Six will eventually form XXVI Állandó Hadsereg whilst the seventh will form the 6. Hadtest army HQ division.

Later that afternoon, the Hungarian navy makes contact with the US Navy for the first time when the 1st Battleship Fleet encounters a small force off the western coast of Hispaniola. In perfect weather the Hungarian battleships are immediately able to open fire and straight away a salvo lands on the unfortunate American light cruiser USS Wilkes-Barre, sending her straight to the bottom of the Caribbean.

With seven battleships against just the one US battleship the battle was unsurprisingly short. The US battleship, USS California, was able to do significant damage to the superstructure of MKH Horthy but was unable to sink the Horthy nor any of the other Hungarian ships before the combined firepower of the Hungarian fleet tore her to pieces. Only an hour after the two fleets had sited each other, it was all over with MKH Romania claiming the scalp of Hungary's first US battleship kill.

Over in southern Burma, IV Állandó Hadsereg have now managed to encircle the forces from Yunnan that are in the area and they are busy collapsing their pockets. Also of note, IV and V Állandó Hadseregs have now met up and there is now a continuous land connection between Rangoon and Singapore.

On the 10th of October work towards improving air launched torpedoes is completed and the research team start a new project on medium bombs. Hungary's aircraft technology is still quite a way behind other advanced nations though it is better than nothing.

Both the 1st and the 2nd Battleship Fleets are currently enjoying the weather in the Caribbean and on the 11th of October there is a rather strange incident involving the 2nd Battleship Fleet. At 13:00 Admiral Simovic radioed in to say that the fleet had made contact with an American fleet off the coast of Santo Domingo. Although this fleet was identified as including just four submarine flotillas Admiral Simovic decided to shadow it rather than simply engage it. In the end contact was lost but it is unknown why Admiral Simovic did not decide to simply sink the American ships.
This is something I don't understand about the 'Patrol' mission, whenever I use it, I just get told that an enemy fleet has been spotted. Although the orders were set to aggressive and my fleet should have no problem defeating the enemy one it has decided not to attack it. Other than manually patrolling using 'Move' orders, which is what I normally use, is there a way to get a fleet to patrol and destroy whatever it finds in the area?

With the navy having failed to take care of the American submarines operating in the Caribbean, it is now the turn of the air force. Hungary's radar installation on Hispaniola has identified a naval presence in the the port of Puerto Rico and Hungary's naval bombers embark on a port strike mission. There were originally seven US submarines sitting in this port, two have already been sunk and over the next few days the remaining five will also end up at the bottom of the harbour. Clearly, with improved air launched torpedoes and dedicated naval bombers Hungary's air force is now much better equipped and able to attack enemy naval forces than it was when it tried to attack the British Mediterranean Fleet earlier in the war.

On the 22nd of October work towards improving combat medicine and first aid is completed. These projects are only at level 1 however so further work towards both is commissioned.
Meanwhile, III Állandó Hadsereg are now pushing Yunnan back in eastern India and should soon be able to reclaim all the land lost to both Yunnan and Tibet.

On the 26th of October, Hungarian scientists announce that they have come up with new plans for a basic four engine airframe. The most important aspect of this is that Hungary can now build transport aircraft, not only giving her a means to drop airborne troops but also allowing her to drop supplies to forces behind enemy lines or otherwise out of supply.
Meanwhile, in southern Burma, the first set of divisions from Yunnan have been destroyed and IV and V Állandó Hadseregs are now pushing north. They are meeting some resistance but nothing that they cannot handle fairly easily and the advance is now gathering pace.

Finally, a look at the global situation at the end of October 1943 showing the extent of the Hungarian Empire.
