Welcome to this AAR!
It is in fact my very first so I hope you can forgive some mistakes or other anomalies which are not to your liking. ;)

Sooo whats on the program?

-Narrative Style AAR with hopefully many Screenshots
-Hungary in HTTT 4.1b (Patch before removal of cores on inheritances)
-Settings on normal, except for lucky nations which are off (mediocre skills :) )

House rules:
-No breaking of the BB-Limit on purpose
-Only DoW with a valid CB (might get stretched a bit if the need arises :) )

Goals?
-Driving the Ottoman Empire out of Europe and safeguarding the Balkans from every muslim intrusion
-Try to inherit Austria in order to form Hungary-Austria ;)
-Expand! (Not in a world conquest but not really barred to culture group or sth.)
-If you come up with other nice goals I'll do it!

Why Hungary?
Hmmm...not quite sure about that. First off I like their flag :D Furthermore I really like their historical meaning as christian bulwark against the Ottomans (although they failed) in the Balkans. Summed up, just for the fun of it!

Enough words, on to glorious conquests!

"Rise Magyars, it is time to dominate the world!" (or at least try to ;) )

Good luck with your first AAR, and may your Two Crowns stay Magyar in nature when you do grab Austria.

The beginning of a new era

1399. A year of turmoil and decision...
In a hall inside the city of Buda the high officials of the Hungarian court waited nervously for the arrival of their king in order to administer his dominion
Finally a door at the far end of the room opened and the herald announced the arrival of Sigismund the first, through God's Grace King of Hungary. During his 12 year reign Hungary had consolidated it's power as the regional power and few had tried to counsel him as his rule was widely acclaimed as wise, just and strong (Admin.7 Diplo.6 Mil.6)

He approached his advisors as they bowed their heads and placed his hands on the table in front of his throne.
"What are the main issues today?"
With a bow a diplomat reported: "Mylord, in my humble opinion we should seek a closer relationship to Austria and Poland, both are strong nations which might aid us against the increasing threat of the Turks."
Sigismund nodded his head in approval.
"We agree on your basic assumptions but we doubt an alliance with Poland might help us since they are facing a dire situation in Lithuania, where the mongols are creeping ever closer to our borders as well. Austria should be a fine choice of ally, it eases the pressure on our borders and could provide excellent support."
The king fell silent for a moment and then spoke to the diplomat again:
"Zsigmund Andrássy, we hereby authorise you to seek a treaty of friendship and support with the Habsburgs in Vienna, while you probe for the possiblities of a royal marriage with the Polish and with our fellow Luxemburgs in Bohemia, who are Emperor."
"As you wish, my king." Zsigmund bowed and left the room to carry out his orders.
rgSTl.jpg

Sigismund looked at the members of the military and raised an eyebrow.
"We have received quite a lot of complaints about the recent recruits, sir."
The highranking general gulped as he felt the piercing gaze of his king.
"Mylord, we have taken every means to drill and discipline our soldiers, I cannot imagine them molesting our citiziens."
"Every means? So our brave Hungarian soldiers are gamblers, thiefs and liars by default? No sir, we think you have been lazy and been happy enough to just fulfill the quotes without guaranteeing the quality. Improve the situation at once and dismiss all the recruits from the last month!"
The shunned advisor lowered his head in defeat.
"Yes, mylord."
NeFVo.jpg

Turning around the man readied himself to leave the room as his king recalled him once more.
"And find new, better suited recruits to increase the strength of the army!"
Nodding the advisor reached the door and left.
EfLX2.jpg

"Any other major events?" The king asked looking into the faces of his council.
As he saw no reactions he continued, while walking up the podest to his throne.
"Very well, let the ambassadors and visitors enter."

---

"Rise, ambassador. Tell me what news do you bring from Hungary?"
Zsigmund graciously pulled out a scroll with the royal seal of the Magyars and handed it over to the Polish king.
"Your highness, mylord King Sigismund I von Luxemburg of Hungary proposes a holy union of the two royal houses of Poland and Hungary in order to seal and reinforce our friendship."
Smiling the Polish king broke the seal and read the letter.
"These are extraordinary news ambassador Andrássy! Such a proposal is most welcome and we have an even better proposal for you. What about an alliance? An alliance to strike down the infidels and heretics in our vicinity? Surely this is in the interests of Hungary as well...?"
Zsigmund shook his head.
"I am sorry to say, your grace, that my liege has precisely given me the task mentioned in the letter and not anything else."
Frowning the Polish king called one of his servants and whispered some orders.
"Ambassador, you will surely stay for a while? What about contemplating our proposal after witnessing the power of our country? Especially our financial strength?"
He smiled and pointed at the servant who just returned with a chest.
Greed lightened up Zsigmunds eyes as he saw it and he replied: "It will be an honor to witness them, your highness."

Weeks later

"This is outrageous!"
"It is the inconvenient truth ambassador!"
King Sigismund pierced the Bosnian in front of him with eyes full of fury.
"With due respect your highness, your sudden claims to territory that had always been Bosnian with the threat of war is an act against all christian virtues!"
Sigismund stood up and spoke with a tone which froze the the audience hall.
"Of all christians, you a heretic, a so called orthodox, dare to consult christian virtues? Ambassador, you a hereby expelled from the realm of Hungary and as soon as you arrive in Bosnia, you can tell your duke, that there is no need for another ambassador as war will be your only answer from the Magyars! Leave! At once!"
"As it pleases your highness."
Without any other words the Bosnian turned around and left.
As Sigismund heard the door close he waved a servant to him and said:
"Assemble the council as fast as possible!"
"Very well, your highness."

One by one the advisors entered the small room besides the audience hall and as the last one arrived the king opened up the meeting.
"The Bosnians have refused to fulfill the corrections on our borders to meet our demands."
The military advisor immediately said: "A cause for war...a just cause. Mylord, I would declare war right now to crush those disrespectful heretics!"
Zsigmund Andrássy intervened: "Do not forget that the Bosnians have the protection of the Turk. This might turn from border skirmish to major war!"
Sigismund nodded as if in approval but said: "Andrássy, we usually value your council high but with those alliances you have secured it should be easy to reach our wargoals. I will personally lead the armies to victory over the heretic and the infidel."
"But your highness!" The chamberlain chimed in, "what if, in the worst case, you fall in battle? You have no heir, what will happen to Hungary?"
Sigismund closed his eyes.
"You speak wisely chamberlain...I cannot leave the fate of this country to luck if we should fall without a heir."
"But isn't the Queen pregnant right now? We have a heir!" the military advisor said.
"Only if the Queen does not loose the child like she lost the two before..."
"No further words of that tragedy, lords. Your objections are sound but my will to fight the Bosnians is still unbroken. I will wait for the Queens course and with God's help we shall smite the heretic in February as soon as a prince greets the world."
(Got Boundary Dispute on Bosnia and forgot to take the screen :S)
---

Months later

Striding up and down the towerchamber King Sigismund finally stopped and stared out of the window.
I should know now...every moment might bring me news if I can calmly go to war with an heir to the throne
A knock on the door.
"Your majesty, I bring news from the queen!"
Excited Sigismund opened the door and his servant bowed hastily before continuing:
"It's a boy, a strong and healthy boy!"
A broad smile formed on the King's face and he grabbed the messenger at his shoulders.
"I have a son! My line will be unbroken! Go now and tell the generals, we are to go to war with the Turks and the heretics!"
"Yes, mylord!" the servant ran down the stairs.

A Week later at Osijek

"My King, I bring letters from Krakow and Vienna!"
"Hurry, hand them over!"
Sigismund took them and quickly broke the seal, as he read both letters his face became first frustrated then bewildered and finally panicked.
"Mylord, what are the news?" Zsigmund Andrássy asked as he stepped out of the royal tent in the army camp.

The king turned around and stared at Zsigmund.
"Tell me, Andrássy....what is the meaning of this treachery!?"
Andrássy took a step back as his king exploded in fury.
"What treachery, your highness?"
"THIS!" Pointing at the letters the king yelled in anger.
"The Habsburgs and the Polish abandoned us!"
Andrássy's eyes widened.
That two-faced Polish bastard....
"But, the treaties..."
Sigismund's piercing gaze drilled holes into Andrássy's head.
"Enough with your treaties...Guards! Put him into chains and keep him locked up!"
"But, mylord!"
"Shut up, we now have a real hard war to win and you failed us!"

Hopefully you enjoyed this first post of the AAR. Just a few questions to you guys:
-Any bad grammar stuff?
-Are the pictures too big?
-Shall I keep it in the current style or go into some less RPG-style?
-Bets on the outcome of the first Hungarian-Ottoman war? ;)

Watch out - those treacherous Hapsburgs are probably hoping you'll fall to the Ottomans so they can pick up the pieces of Hungary. You'll have to deal with them later. GRRR!

Maybe you should build an alliance with your relatives in Bohemia? Maybe you can trust family more than rapacious minor German nobility who somehow managed to get an Archduchy somehow! :p

The First Hungarian-Ottoman War

The Hungarian camp in Serbia

"What a remarkable sight our king is..."
"Aye, everywhere he goes, I'll follow."
Solemnly the soldiers held their spears upright as the kings eyes swept over his army.

"Soldiers, loyal magyars today we shall fight the infidel and he shall bleed for all the injustice he brought upon the good christians in Europe! We have beaten the Bosnians, the Serbs and occupied their lands, tell me do you fear the Turk?"
"Nooo!"
Excited the soldiers shouted out their high esteem and rattled with their weapons.
"What will you do if you face a Turk tonight?"
"Beat him!"
"Will you grant him mercy?"
"No mercy!"
"Then my fellow Magyars, ride and crush the infidel!"
The central plaza of the army camp erupted into loud cheers as the king returned to his tent.

"Everything is ready mylord." Sigismunds Squire pointed at the shining armor next to the entrance. "Do you wish to get ready for combat my king?"
With a nod Sigismund gave his approval and within minutes he was clad in iron, ready to do battle.
Waving his priest to his side, he spoke one last prayer before mounting his horse at the entrance.

Unsheating his sword, pointing to the camp of the Ottomans just opposite of the plain Sigismund ordered the Army of Hungary forward to meet the infidel
"To Victory!"

The first bloody clash between the Turks and the Magyars, resulting in the fall of Serbia

---

Outside the gates of the citadel in Kosovo

"Generals, I believe that all of you know the importance of the control over Kosovo? It resembles our entry into the Ottoman holdings in Europe. Although the Turk is also fighting the Timurid Horde he has put up fierce resistance to our invasion. The bloody affairs in Serbia should be in your memories, lords. Our army is dwindling in its size in each battle and I doubt that we can afford to wait much longer until sueing for peace."
"But your highness, we are already on the brink of an overwhelming victory! As soon as we control Kosovo the Greek peninsula lies open for us, we might even capture Adrianople!"
"We really appreciate your enthusiasm general, but the situation is dire, if the Turk would not be stretched at the limit we have little doubt that he would have easily crushed us."
(manpower almost depleted :O and very thankful for the bloody war with the Timurids, although they whitepeaced out after a while, forgot the screenshot of course :S)
"Nevertheless, mylord, we need to stay our ground in Kosovo or we will fight this war in vain with no gains in the end."
"I agree..." Sigismund thoughtfully let his hand run through his beard before striking the table in resolve. "Let them come, we will teach them to fear the Magyars!"

At last!

Yet another war council, this time in Nis

"Generals, it seems that we have achieved the exhaustion of the Turk. Our scouts report that the turkish armies have not recovered from their defeats via reinforcements. It took us 3 bloody years to bring them this close to the edege. We now seek council...what do you envisage as outcome of this war?"
The marshal of the vanguard spoke up:
"Your highness, I believe that we should now finish the job...seek a decisive engagement with the Turk, crush them and then go on to claim whatever you want at the negotiations. The time is ripe to drive the Ottomans from Europe!"
The quartermaster protested immediately:
"With due respect to your zeal marshal, I simply will not allow that this war drags on a day longer than it has to, as unbelievable as it may sound I must say that Hungary's ressources are depleted, our armies are mostly made of hired mercenaries right now and I doubt that they can claim victory against the Turks in an all-out battle."
Sigismund nod and said: "This is exactly the problem we are facing, sires, my preferred course of action would be to open up negotiations now. Does anyone see any major disadvantage doing this?"
The assembled automatically stared at the empty chair on which Andrássy had sat at the beginning of the war but did not speak.
"Very well, let us see what concessions the Sultan is ready to make..."

---
A week later

"To the king, I have news from the Bayezid, first of his name on the turkish throne!"
The messenger hastily rode through the camp, brushing aside the soldiers until arriving at the royal tent.
Sigismund stood waiting for him at the entrance.
"Mylord."
Without further words he gave the king the letters.
N795m.jpg

(44% WS and not even a concession of defeat?! You want stabhitting, you get stabhitting...Damn Turks! ;D)
Enraged Sigismund threw the letters at the ground.
"Let's see how you will answer my demands as soon as I sack your capital! I shall crush your arrogance with the might of my armies!"

---
2 Years later...in Edirne(Adrianople)

"We see that your highness has finally seen it fit to arrive at our table for negotiations on a peace treaty...."
Sigismund could not hide his glee as he saw the Sultan of the Turks approaching, flanked by soldiers in the Hungarian colors.
The Sultan snapped:
"We shall repay you everything, I swear to you on the blessed tombs of my fathers. This shame will not go unavenged!"
Smiling Sigismund pointed at the ready to sign treaties on the table.
"We hope that the next time we meet, you highness has improved his manners...but for now it is enough to me to see these papers signed and sealed..."
Bayezid Osmanli the first stared his opponent into the eyes and put his signature beneath.
"Until next time, magyar scum!"
"It will be my pleasure..."
NENZE.jpg

(Finally with -3 stab and WE close to 20 the Ottomans give in to my demands...)

---
Buda

"The king! The victorious king! The glorious king! Make way! Make way!"
The outriders calls were unanswered as the crowd just got closer and narrowed the streets of Buda to a bottleneck.
Cheers arose from everywhere and the people were singing, celebrating the victory over the infidel in a bloody 5 year war.

Delayed by the festivities Sigismund finally arrived at the palace and quickly gathered his advisors around him.
"Any major events we should know of?"
"Mylord, the union and the lands of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania have broken apart..."
imNRC.jpg

"Broken apart?! What do you mean?"
"Let me allow you to show you the newest map of that area..."
7wkj8.jpg

"This sure makes our borders to the northeast a bit untidy..."
"Is there anything else of importance?"
His majordomus and the other high officials at court shook their heads.
"Nothing of importance, your highness, the situation sees some tension between us, the Polish and the Habsburgs....but otherwise nothing."
Only the teacher of the prince had to report in detail on his fosterling.
"Your highness, your son has certainly inherited his majesties best traits but...he has an acute lack of manners I must admit..." (admin.6 diplo.3 mil. 7)
Sigismund did not dare to believe what he was hearing.
"A lack of....manners?!"
"I believe the dire situation of missing a accomplished diplomat at court might have an effect on the princes education..."
"A accomplished diplomat..."
And before Sigismund thought his mouth said: "Like Andrássy?"
Silence answered his question, but the king pressed on.
"Is he still in the dungeons?"
"Yes, mylord...shall...shall I send for him?"
Sigismund's face showed anger and contempt, but also an amount of schadenfreude, which must frighten Andrássy.
"No, he is obviously unworthy of teaching the prince... We believe we have just found a much more fitting punishment for that lousy traitor."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for all the positive feedback :D I really appreciate it!
And indeed the Habsburgs should never be trusted, but more about that in the next update^^
Good job at guessing the outcome Derahan ;)

Well done versus the Ottomans. Ironic that the Timurids gave you so much help ;). Soon time for you to vassalise or annex the Serbs and Bosnians. Lots of opportunities in Poland now :D

The Years of Consolidation 1406-1411

Buda, council chamber next to the audience hall

"This should be punishment for Andrássy? But mylord..."
Waving his hand Sigismund cut off the rest of the protest and continued without flinching
"We believe that it is fit. There is no way that the Hapsburgs or the Polish, whatever fragment of them you refer to, will take our offers seriously. Their courts will just serve as the anvil on which we will hammer Andrássy's pride to shambles."
"But, your highness, what if he succeeds in establishing alliances with the Hapsburgs and the Polish?"
"Even in that most remote of all scenarios, they will serve a purpose...long forgotten have been our claims to Moravia, which is currently held by our cousins in Praha, if he succeeds it might be the time to reclaim it."
Um3tQ.jpg

The assembled generals exchanged uncertain looks before the quartermaster dared to protest.
"With due respect to the strength of our armies, my king we cannot win a war against the Holy Roman Emperor! The Bohemian armies alone would already prove quite a match for ours but the concentrated power of the Empire is a force too powerful to beat."
In the sudden silence following the protest the king's face showed the battle between willingness to listen and his ambitions to even more prestige and power. In the end reason won the day and Sigismund said: "Very well then...we will postpone a Bohemian campaign until we have gathered more strength, but we will not forget our claims!"
Feeling the relief flooding through the room Sigismund dismissed the council and returned to the audience hall to meet with the foreign dignitaries.
(As I got the mission to "Protect against the Ottomans" during the war with them, I was in a good position to fulfill it and after the war they disbanded some units and I got this nice new suicidal mission, might prove useful later but for sure not with 400 manpower and a not so full treasury :D )

---
Buda, Royal Court of Justice

"The accuser, the diocese of Slavonia, shall make his accusations now!"
The voice of Sigismund resounded through the wide open hall and every last auditor could sense the boredom of the king, dealing with a from his point of view trivial matter.
The delegate of the Bishop of Slavonia rose from his seat and bowed before the court.
"Your royal highness, I am here today on behalf of the Bishop of Slavonia to file a protest against the noble family which has illegaly taken control of the income out of the fields around our monastery. In doing so they also took away our revenues and even dared to defile your majesty's name as they alleged that your highness have given the affair it's consent!"
Murmurs arouse between the ranks of the auditors and smiling the delegate continued.
"Therefore we believe that as a just punishment, we are to receive the doubled amount of revenues as indemnity and receded the control over the fields."
With another bow he sat down.
Sigismund immediately stood up and said:
"Your accusation is invalid."
"But, your highness..."
"There is a simple reason to that. I did in fact gave my approval in this affair and your bishop should not have complained. As you are wasting our royal time your bishop is to pay a fine of 15 ducats to the royal treasury."
The delegate rose again and nodded sligtly in defeat

Buda, council chamber 3 weeks later

"Tell me now Andrássy...what did you achieve in the Austrian and Polish lands?"
Andrássy, still unbroken from his stay in the dungeons, said:
"It will please your highness to hear that I have succeeded in the task you have given me."
For a moment Sigismund was speechless
Perhaps I misjudged Andrássy, maybe he is in fact just a victim of Hapsburg treachery...
"You got an alliance with the Hapsburgs and with the Polish?"
"Yes, mylord, although I took the initiative to ally with the now dominant Duchy of Mazovia instead of the Kingdom of Poland..."
"Do you have the treaties with you?"
Reaching for his bag, Andrássy took out 2 scrolls and showed them to the king.
Slowly Sigismund was able to wipe his face of disbelief clean and said:
"You did very well, Andrássy...you have redeemed yourself again, from today henceforth you shall be known as SirAndrássy!"
Smiling Andrássy bowed his head and said:
"I thank you for this great honor, but there are also other things to note in our foreign policy, mylord."
Nodding Sigismund said: "We are prepared to listen..."
"We have a new neighbour, mylord, around the area of Budjak the people have revolted and declared independence from the Khan of the Golden Horde."
McoUH.jpg

(Romania in 1408?! Gotta love stuff like this :) )
"Furthermore I advise your majesty to take the heretic lands to the south as a base to drive the Turks out of Europe."
"Sound plans, Sir Andrássy...sound plans..."
"But enough of foreign policy for now...chancellor, tell me how much progress are we doing with the integration of the Duchy of Transylvania into the royal desmene?"
"Happily I am able to report that the power transition proved to be smooth and without any complications, as the nobility supported our cause in a very remarkable way."
SysVy.jpg

"Good work, chancellor."
"What else is there to report, lords?"
The archbishop of Buda spoke:
"I have good news from Rome, your highness. The Papal conclave is yours to command and with it is the power of the Pope!"
3ZhHg.jpg

Sigismund's eyes lit up as he saw endless new possibilites.
"Are we able to call for a new crusade? Or can we weaken our rivals with excommunication?"
"Unfortunately none of these are an option at the moment...the last crusade is still ongoing and the last excommunication is just months old..."
"I understand...the control over the conclave was achieved through our attempts to repatriate the poor heretics to the holy catholic church wasn't it?"
"Yes, mylord but there have been some minor issues in regard to the conversion..."
Narrowing his eyes Sigismund gave his archbishop his feared piercing gaze.
"What problems?"
Reddening the archbishop said:
"Open religious revolts mylord..."
YbMTY.jpg

Furiously the king smashed his fist on the table
"Ready the army! We'll crush those heretics personally. Revolting against us although we want to help them escape from hell, despicable bosnians..."
As Sigismund was about to storm out of the council chamber, Andrássy held him back.
"Mylord, one last report!"
Turning around Sigismund ordered:
"Quickly!"
"I have received some trustable intelligence that the ottomans are on a brink of collapse, we should abuse this situation and seize the heretic lands as soon as the ceasefire expires."
XDhgI.jpg

(Also in the screen is the quite amusable fact that the Kazakhs are now leading a PU with the Horde, hopefully it will weaken them in the long term.)
"We had planned to do so anyway, but thanks for the advice. You are dismissed, lords."
And without further ado he fielded his army to crush the revolters.

---
Hungarian camp in Dalamtia near the Bosnian border

"Today, we stand here for another holy, just crusade against infidel and heretic alike!"
Sigismund excelled his rhetorical skills in front of his assembled armed forces and stirred up the morale of his troops.
"The last time we challenged the Turk, we won a glorious victory and I intend to do so again. I ask you, my loyal magyars, will you follow us again, like you followed us in Serbia and Kosovo?"
"Yes, we will!"
"Then onwards to victory, together with our Polish allies!"
With the tremendous sound of thousands of rattling weapons Sigismund returned to his tent, again awaiting a messenger from Vienna.
As the vanguard crossed the borders and wiped aside the frail resistance of Bosnian troops Sigismund finally received his letters, but the news were grim.
CjARI.jpg

Treacherous Hapsburgs struck again!
Slowly Sigismund von Luxemburg crunched the letters and threw them away.
Mounting his horse and accompanied by his guard the king cursed the Hapsburgs but kept on the road towards Bosnia.
"We'll show you...Vienna, we will..."

Next Update: The second Hungarian-Ottoman War!

JDMS: I really like the idea of driving into the lithuanian mess, but I need a CB :D

dinofs: That Mazovia surely surprised me as well and something even better, they are nice allies ;)

Allmyjames: Without the Timurids I probably would have lost the war :O But this time it gets rather easy although I do not want to spoil too much on the next update. (played in advance waaaaaaaay too far ^^ )
By the way I started reading your CK AAR of Saxon England, a very enjoyable read :)
