I'm still toying with it myself, some successes, some failures. You do have more money/loans for mercs, so a straight up battle in neutral terrain actually CAN work, but their general is going to be at least as good as yours. They do seem far more hesitant to attack in poor terrain, yet they do sometimes. Haven't figured out the rhyme or reason for that yet. FWIW, I'm having better luck in Dauphinne/Savoy then in Navara/Bearn, but that's a bit far to manage and I can't say I've been consistently successful yet.

Except for Portugal, that is. They're consistently useless. Oh, they'll happily join the war, but they don't seem inclined to attach themselves for the necessary field battles. They prefer to make a suicide beeline for some doomstack in central France by themselves. So maybe delay calling them in; they'll attach for some sieges, though, then you can use them for some mop up operations (while your doomstack tries to recover from the battle that nearly killed it). Overall, it feels easier, but maybe a bit less formulaic (or I'm still figuring out the forumulas). But you need to keep a sharp eye out for a late join by Hungary or Genoa, or whoever France cons into fighting its battles for it.

For me, Portugal was extremely useful. They threw their mercs and manpower at the french, and it wore the french manpower down. They sieged here and there and overall they were useful. Honestly, I think I would've lost without them, the extra troops were really needed.

I won the war, I wish to genuinely thank people for their extremely useful advice. (I won without a single loan, too. It's 1455, my Manpower is back to 10 000 , I have 24 000 soldiers...that's going to be a game of world conquest on epic proportion)

That said, I won with so much save scumming that it's basically cheating, but....

I had 2 armies of 14 (10 infantry, 4 cavalry) all the time side by side and a whole bunch of mercenaries. You should try requesting access from Navarra and Brittany, it was easier attacking the besiegers of Normandy and south-western France from there.

Interesting... I had about 30k distributed across the border at Aragon and Navarra (10k each or so), and France just stood there with about 60k total troops and bled my manpower dry (because of a stupid Castilian/Aragonian war). I've no idea what the difference would be, as France had access through Navarra.

Step one, get military access from Brittany.

Step two, get military access from Navarra.

Step three, order all your troops to avoid battle while marching along the west coast to Navarra. Order all your troops in England to sail there as well.

Step four, Unpause and send the first available diplomat to call Portugal in.

Your united army is enough to give France and her vassals something to think about. Fight the war intelligently and focus on keeping your army alive and not allowing them to capture any of your lands. Your can win but expect the cost to be high. Completely crushing France is pointless because the PU you get from it will take a half dozen wars to cement and by the time you annex them you will have spent ten times as much diplo power as if you had simply used conquest.

For me, it's was like 22k in Gascogne region, 25k in Normandy and the rest somewhere who knows where. Also, they had their manpower at the minimum for most of the war, which was the plan. You should try first bleeding the French manpower through various means, after that, try sieging France's over-zealous vassals who just throw men fanatically to defend France. After those two phases are done, you should try sitting on ALL the provinces, so they do not consolidate an new potentially-dangerous army. Then just siege the provinces 1 by 1 and viola. That is how I won my war.

Just start and restart until you have a Commandant available.

Extra 5% discipline makes things 50% easier.

Also, what matters is winning the HYW in Ironman. I don´t care if you reloaded once. Reload = cheat.

Well, that sounds too easy. Perhaps the game should lock out a country forever if you ever lose a campaign or resign before 1821.
