Actually there was a reason why major European countries haven't claimed core Africa (excluding north Africa) as their colonies till late 19th century - local terrain/climate with compulsory malaria and Tsetse fly (hello, sleeping sickness) + lack of means to travel rivers upstream without steam engines made conquest very hard.

Right now quite frequently by 1770-1780 whole Africa is being conquered by major european colonial nations.
Yes, sure, player or sometimes even AI should be able to perform this feat, it's a game after all. But I think that there should be some kind of mechanic (and I don't think that it's really hard to implement) that should at least make conquest a little bit harder. Even maybe something like increase of coring cost...

P.S. But please, please, please do not boost their tech level!

More attrition would be good. I mean, attrition is already fairly high in these regions due to the tropical climate modifier, but it's nothing like the 30% that used to be possible in the earlier versions of EU4. I think the developers decided to reduce the impact of attrition in general because the AI simply cannot deal with it so well.

Another option would be to introduce special colonial troops (depending on tech groups) and give regular troops a huge malus if they have to fight in terrain/climate zones they aren't used to. Maybe it could even be done in a way that prevents you from marching 50k through rainforest, the Himalayas, or huge deserts in the first place. But I guess that option would potentially alter the core mechanics of the game a bit too much.

I don't think more attrition would work. It will only make african countries to be pain to play with. And the "rich" european would just use mercs to save the manpower.

there are already locals with increased coring cost, and the one that tends to eat the place on my games is morocco... I want less core cost increase not more

the only correct solution is more numbers, like india, but mali is usually hard enough since they got attrition, forts and good numbers unless you break all the alliances/are a great power

I think it was a mistake adding all these tags in central africa, because in the timeframe of EU4, they were not really discovered (at least not by the 1500s)/conquerable.

Perhaps more events that target countries with provinces in those areas whose capital isn’t on the same continent? Things that ruin development, lower production, increase revolt, spread disease and just make it miserable to own the core provinces of Africa without being African yourself?
