Less idea cost, less nationalism stable tolerance and 50% to the accepted culture. It also comes with a great variance of policies.

I have to disagree. a Game that is so war focused as EUIV, and where morale and manpower are the most important aspects of war, make defensive the overall best, hands down, idea set in game.

Humanist is the best idea group ever for large nations. It is impossible to culture convert everything. The accepted culture idea is the main reason why it is so good. In one game that idea gave me around a hundred extra force limit, and I had a pretty petty Empire of only 2/3 of Germany and half of Poland.

Humanism idea group is great. Mughals start with the entire group already completed (from 1556, start of Akbar's reign), and they can easily subdue the entire subcontinent with all the cultures and religions, and keep peace no matter what the provinces convert to.

Every other nation in India has to deal with almost unending religious and cultural rebellions if not careful.

It is bad if you are planning not to play a multicultural cosmopolitan empire like that, and if you are planning on playing a very religious nation which accepts only one religion.

Humanist ideas is a synonim of "conquer it and forget about it".

It reduces the nationalism.
It gives you -unrest.
It synergises REALLY well with your +tolerance ideas, if you have any. But even without them, you'd be probably fine without any converting.

All of the above gives you a possibility to pretty much forget about rebels in the conquered provinces, meaning one less shit to worry about.

Accepted cultures and cheaper idea cost comes as a nice bonus.

Personally, I only take religious over humanist if I have any +missionary strength ideas or plan to do a lot of culture converting (or both).

The only problem I see with humanist idea is that there are events about primary religion/culture people starting to get wary of so much tolerance, and events about religious and ethnic mobs and such start popping up.

But then they are a minor nuisance if you have even a small army.

I will eventually get both in every single game, because they are that good. The question as to which one to get first is easy:: If you are going to westernize get Humanist first. If you are not westernizing get Religious.

It's nice to build a tolerant, enlightened empire. For me the most important part is the -50% accepted culture threshold. Especially when combined with NI's that also lower it, like Poland or the Ottomans.

You can actually get to 110 percent.
So not possible for Europe-only strategy and even less possible for monarchy. Too bad, I just got excited.

I find it a redundant idea group. Religious unity, tolerance of heretics and tolerance of heathens is simply made useless by converting provinces.
Nationalism only works for annexed provinces for the first 10 years and after that it's useless. If I'm vassalizing and integrating, it is useless.
That's 4 ideas which have no long term benefit.
Unrest is nice, but in reality, 1 stack of Mercs is all you need to deal with all of your rebel problems.
Accepted Culture: Only benefits if you're a small/medium nation. If you blob, very few things will be your accepted culture and it wouldn't make too much of a difference anyway once you blob.
BROT: Gives -0.66 AE per year or -10 AE every 15 years. In the HRE, it is an additional 3-4 BT province every 15 years. Not a lot to be honest. If I have to expand in the HRE, AE can't be managed beyond a certain point anyway, unless you expand really slowly. I find the better solution to be improving relations to 100 with the nations and keeping strong allies.

Overall it is a weak idea group, considering it costs Admin points, although it represents some historical accuracy of tolerant nations. Taking Religious (even just upto the 4th idea is always a better alternative), because once you've converted most of your provinces and blobbed enough that a few provinces of another religion wont drastically affect your religious unity, you can simply drop the idea group and replace it with something more beneficial.

I think that the OP is missing some hidden mechanics. First of all: high religious tolerance reduces religious unity loss from that type of faith. So if you play Mughals that already have + heathen tolerance, you actually don't have to convert anything! Secondly, as other's have said, that accepted culture thing really gets powerful when combined with national ideas and policies. That combined with reduced nationalism and flat unrest reduction means that you can start reducing autonomy much earlier. In the end you get much more out of each province you take much quicker.

If I play a country with either lowered accepted culture threshold or heathen tolerance (heretic is generally easier to acquire) I always grab humanism as one of my first two groups. Otherwise it depends on the situation or roleplay.
