Hecklers suggestion gave me another idea.
Why not represent oil and precious metal prospectors in in-game events and decisions. They shaped the economy and populations of whole regions, so why not? This should add flavour and provide the player with high risk - high reward ventures (like financially supporting the prospectors).

Prospecting may have been expensive efforts for individuals but not so for states. Governments have deep pockets.

That's namely because it was a terrible period for a lot of people. Many countries went into a financial crisis. England itself had over 3 million unemployed. It saw the rise of Hitler and civil war in china. Essentially nothing more then the big show of ww2.

The 1920's was a golden age in human history.

So are plane bombers also pointless and micro?

The Paris gun played a tiny, insignificant role in WW1. It killed something like 250 civilians and was in use for only a few months. That isn't something worth modeling in the game.

Bombers on the other hand played a massive role in WW1 and many other wars of the time period, and as we all know, developed into a key weapon of any military. Massive guns like the Paris gun were not continued by any nation.

You cant compare the two. Jet engines were not even close to being invented in the era, while Zeppelins were and had huge potential. For a time they were immensely popular and were considered to be the "transports of the future". If not for one little event (the Hindenburg) you would be flying in Zeppelins regularly right about now.

While I admit that is a somewhat heinous analogy (although Jet engines are only ~10 years outside of the time frame) I don't think zeppelins should be a large part of this game, because they weren't a large part of history, and they were discontinued because they were proved to be nonviable and dangerous. Maybe, if strategic bombing is a feature of the game they could be added as a military unit, or they could be a product of a factory, merely as a cash good, but beyond that there is no point in including them.

Of course it should be abstracted, but still represented.

Still wouldn't hurt to give the game more flavour.

Maybe. But Paradox likes to skimp on events these days, and I'd rather have them spend time making historical events and decisions than obscure flavors. This is something that could be better done by a mod any ways.

Prospecting may have been expensive efforts for individuals but not so for states. Governments have deep pockets.

Some governments can afford many can't... Saudi Arabia, Persia, Egypt, Brunei, Malaysia, Venezuela, Libya... all developed their oil reserves by their own government not being able to develop so selling highly dubious 20-50 year concessions to large foreign companies to develop and take the majority of profits.

Tourism can be simplified by rich people demand for ocean liners, airplanes, zeppelins or other stuff. At least steamers can be easily added. Right?

Airships and deregibles were more a morale than a tactacle thing, if they were to be represented in the game as battleships are then they should be constructed by decision launching event chains and should one crash or be shot down immediately launch one of a number of events [as the same event every time one fell would be silly] with consequences to the nation. And not just military airships but civilian ones too.

Big Ships were also treated in a similar fashion.

Various countries experimented with zeppelins.
However they had an unfortunate tendency to crash. Not just one little Hindenburg accident............

Yes... more reasons than the Hindenburg that zepplins were not a major part of history. Prop planes had numerous crashes as well but went on to become a large industry because the technology remained viable and accidents more rare than with zepplins.

The problems with weather and flammable materials affected zepplins much more than airplanes. Even today dirigibles are only on some engineers drawing boards as fantasies because of technical difficulties- slow speed, more affected by weather, and the difficulties of making large cargo carrying capacity vs size. Helium is much more expensive than hydrogen and difficult to get in large quantities for the massive sizes that would be needed to be profitable commercially.

No way. Airplanes are much faster than zepplins. It took four days in a zepplin to go over the atlantic. And the laws of physics are such that you can't exactly attach a jet engine to a zepplin.

tourism is an excellent idea. POPs moving from one province to another (outside the nation or within) but only when they have saved enough cash reserves. they then spend that cash reserve once they arrive in the target province boosting the economy.

You can perhaps have a "Tourism"- resource which rich pops want to consume and which is produced in several provinces (may be culture, prestige and diplomatic relationship could influence it). But transfering a german pop to Italy for a few days and then bring them back would be a technical nightmare with little to no benefits. Just a nightmare for programmers.

Airplanes are faster then helicopters, busses, cars, ships and railroads too. Does that mean they are the only means of transportation around today for distances above 100km?

Zeppelins are probably alot cheaper to run, and offer scenery views that no other transport can compete with. Id love to take a ride in a Zeppelin if it was affordable and available.

On topic: I love having more flavour items and techs in the game. Bring em on! :)
Zeppelins and balloons also had a very important military use as recon, even before airplanes were invented. Just because the great war happened after 1904 IRL doesn't mean it can't happen in 1894 in Victoria 2. Can you imagine how important Zeppelins & powered Balloons would have been then?

Well don't want to dezepplin the thread with OT but as far as some discoveries relating to slightly different timeline... since the US Civil War saw great use of ballons that still doesn't mean a new military unit should be created... just make it part of military techs and give some modifier to defense.

My guess is if zepps are not included as a tech or invention in the base game, these can easily be modded in by those who want, and given the much more open-ended nature of Clausewitz games, might even be able to create a new unit (or if air units remain brigades in V2, haven't had any DDs yes on military units so can't tell), then air brigade) for the zepps.

As for tourism, it really wasn't the huge industry it would become starting in the 1950s, given the much higher cost of travel in comfort (especially interncontinental) relative to personal incomes in the era. The genesis of what it would become was definitely established in the 1920s and 1930s, but unlike today no nation was dependent for significant sources of their national income on tourist spending - there were simply too small a % of the population with the financial means to take a vacation, especially a long distance vacation, in this era.

Air units should be seperate units and not just land attachments. Organize them as squadrons, which is more appropriate of the time. It doesn't have to be that complicated. Just bomber squadrons and fighter squadrons.
Since V2 is being made from the start for the 1836-1935 timeframe there's really no excuse not to pay some more attention to this era and especially it's technology.

^Indeed.

As Ive stated before it would be cool to have air units that fly around the battlefield ala HOI2 except they only act as spotters, ie- give more info on troop movements/fortifications/general province info etc etc. Then later add rudimentary combat planes.
