I have a question about HRE. Can any Catolic ruler be elected? I have tried it many times with France and Poland, but I never got the imperial crown. The only ones I've ever seen elected are the kings of Spain, Austria and a couple of times one of the German princes (such as Hessen, Lorraine, etc)

This is because France and Poland can never have any territories in the HRE, as stated above.
No territory in the HRE -> No member of the HRE -> No chance to be elected emperor.

Absolutely not. There is no need to own territory in the HRE to become emperor. I've done it as Genoa which is out of the empire by the 17th century. It's been done as England, France, and I don't know who else in AARs. Besides which Poland can have territory in the HRE, if they take Eastern Pommerania (for example) it will remain in the HRE. It is only Muslims France and Holland (as far as I know) who remove territory from the HRE.

Be patient with Poland. It'll take a while but you can become the rightful ruler of Germany.

It is possible for non-member countries to become emperor. I have personally seen Spain, France (even once when player-played and under a nonhistorical regency in the 1700s!), Scotland, Genoa, Tuscany (after their territories left the HRE), and even (once) a very early game England become emperor.

Mt first game with Austria in the IGC and guess what? Karl V elected as HRE:D

Mind you the rate I am annexing the countries that won't vote for me I should be HRE for a long time.

I noticed as I that as I annexed countries and allowed my allies to take chunks of the spoils my BB stayed reasonably low, especially as most were gobbled up just as they turned protestant.

Austria in the IGC with a shared Netherlands with Spain and beginning with Alsace is such a different proposition from the normal GC when you seem to spend most of your time sat on your hands.

Really? I've never seen that in my games! Are there special circumstances when this happens? Sorry for the misinformation, I really thought it impossible. I guess I just have to retire to the AAR forums... :(
