I am currently playing as Austria in the GC and decided to "buy" the HRE again for the victory points this position gives. I checked on the Religion map to find out who was eligible to vote and them just kept giving them small gifts and staying out of trouble for about 20 odd years.

I figured that if enough electors preferred me to Spain then they would vote for me, so my army didn't even move from my Capital. I made no aggressive moves at all and sure enough my diplomatic relations were so good that I outnumbered Spain in voting Nations by 2 to 1. When the elections came up however Spain got the HRE. Can anyone tell me why?

As a seperate note I took the mission NO POLAND-LITHUANIA IN THE HRE figuring that I could prop up my allies the Hanseatic League long enough to take the 50 VPs. Imagine my shock when I lost 33 VPs even though Poland had only gone eastwards.

I figure that Poland start with a province that is in the HRE but on the religion map that this is not shown within the HRE border. Can anyone tell me if this is the case and if so which province(s) do they hold

Also, the borders of the HRE are moved when a non-HRE member (P-L, for example) gains a province in the Empire. When France gets Lorraine, it isn't part of the HRE anymore on the map. When you take the mission 'No France in the HRE', you need to take it back from them, so that the HRE is back to it's old borders.

Yeah I saw that one, but I never take that mission unless I can help it unless they are at war with Spain because France are so aggressive.

Austria are a strange country to play as their whole reason for existance seems to be to balance ot wars between other major powers.

In fact one of the main reasons I like EU so much is that each of the Major Powers has a different means of going about its business. If you want fights day in, day out then Turkey Russia etc are just right but if you want to take over the whole world then go England or Spain.

If paranoia is your bag they Austria or Poland are the way forward, and if you dont want to fight at all then it has to be Portugal.

This game is GREAT!!:D

I'm not so sure about the Polish provinces near Prussia being in the HRE (in-game-wise)... I've conquered the whole region as an IGC Unified Prussia and the border of the HRE did not change (of course, maybe this was because I was Prussia and so was also a non-member?) As far as the missions, though, it IS the geographical identifications, which don't line up exactly - the eastern Prussian provinces are listed as HRE geographically, but are not inside the Empire in-game. The same usually goes for the French-border provinces, as they leave the HRE when they become part of France.

Spain, Sweden, Denmark, England and the Papal States must be considered members if this is the way it's done, because their territories stay in the HRE. Actually, I rather suspect it's only specific countries whose territories leave the HRE - I've only witnessed it with France, the Netherlands and the Muslim countries.

France, Netherlands, P-L, Switzerland after getting reformed, I think, and of course the 'heathens'. At least, that's what I've seen. ;)

Also, at some point during the XVIIth century, IIRC, the italian provinces cease being part of the HRE.

About the HRE elections, well, they're one of the most elusive parts of the game, so don't go nuts at it. Just keep in mind that, if you're Austria, and behave yourself, you'll surely get it :D.

Thanx for the info. so far guys but does anyone know how the voting for the HRE is worked out. If I paly any country but Austria then Karl V gets to be HRE. If I play Austria no matter what I do Carlos I of Spain is Emperor:confused:

1st off your relation to yourself matters in EU1, when you click on one of your own provinces and then go diplomatic screen, view relations, does your own country appear dark red? It's a bug? nobody is quite sure, you can always edit the savegame file to put it back to +200.

Nobody has really ever been able to come up with a water tight explanation of how to get elected HRE, but here are a few threads from the past that tried to shed light on this.

http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=11169
http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19012

These are just a selection, do a search on electors or elected, since the forum won't let you search three letter words, ie HRE, there are so many threads. Hope this helps, from what i can see you have many hours of reading with no definitive answer at the end of it :D

Actually i do it the other way round, Hungary will stay Catholic so you always have a chance at a diplo annex, so be nice to them.

Bohemia normally goes Protestant, breaking all your relations with them, so i normally bash them early on.

Doesn't the fact that someone has a CB on another party, in this case Austria on Hungary mean that your relations are constantly pushed lower though!

I have tried that route a few times before as other countries in the normal GC but it never seems to work, not for me at least

Yes, a CB lowers your relations over time, but with your religious tolerance slider for Catholics maxed out, and perhaps an alliance with Hungary should more than compensate this.

I'm actively testing how the elections work. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Have a look under my Genoa AAR. I'll open a new thread when I have a theory that matches all my tests. This is a problem that can be worked out!
