If you are using the holy war casus belli then all of those with the same religion of the person you are attacking may join the war. What i do is ether 1) use my chancellor fabricate a claim and attack with that casus belli or 2) attack and assault my holy war target quickly to take the holdings before the other Muslim nations join in get the war score to 100% really fast and force a peace deal. i hope i answered your questions if not i will do my best to answer better.

Can't you use the Roman Expansion CB it doesn't cause dogpile like the Holy war CB to my knowledge?
Attack revolters. Nations can't hop in to defend if they're at war with the target.
Stack all your retinues up on the border and assault assault assault. The other muslims can't do jack if you win the war before they can ship troops in.

Also HRE = Holy Roman Empire, which was entirely seperate from the real Roman Empire.

I don't agree completely here (especially entirely separate is much too strong). Unlike the Byzantine Empire, which developed directly or is a continuation of the Eastern Roman Empire (eastern half of the Roman Empire), the medieval Holy Roman Empire is a successor state of the Roman Empire in the Catholic West and it traces its legitimacy (in part) back to the Roman Empire, however it did not have the direct link the Byzantine Empire had.

Charlemagne was declared Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope, a position with absolutely zero power over the Roman Empire. The Pope really had no right to crown someone Emperor and claim that he was the new Roman Emperor the way he did. Just because *they* considered themselves successors that does not mean they *are* successors. It's like your local bishop saying "Yeah you know what, I think I'll crown you as Napoleon's successor" - he can do it if he likes, but the claim is bull.

To nitpick Charlemagne was declared Roman Emperor/Emperor of the Romans, even Otto the Great was, Holy was only added later unofficially. Clearly we think differently about the claim, including the translatio imperii (especially regarding the former Western Roman Empire). However the Pope is not your local bishop, he is the head of Roman Catholicism, the Western branch of 'imperial Christianity' (itself a branch of Christianity), Orthodoxy is the Eastern branch. Furthermore the idea of a (Roman) Empire after Constantine the Great became connected with Christianity.

As Catholicism traditionally sees the Pope as the Vicar of Christ on earth and as he controlled the city of Rome, I think he was very much able to crown someone Roman Emperor.
