I know there are a lot of events out there that create a unified HRE; I have one in my EUII event folder now. But I was thinking of more realistic ways it could have happened, rather than just through owning Vienna, Rome, etc...

Here's my thought. In 1495, Fredrick III of the Hapsburgs conducted a Reichstag that came up with a group of reforms that was aimed at either 1) leading to the creation of a modern state or 2) more clearly defining the relationships between the emperor and the electors/dukes/etc. While IRL only 2 was sucessful, what if the Hapsburgs forced 1?

My thought is an event that gives HAB the option to force some centralized reforms upon the German Minors. If that choice is picked, the HAB would gain CB sheilds on all of the HRE, the HEI tag, and maybe war with key German/Italian minors, PAP and FRA.

Then maybe a second "End of the War of Worms" event, annexing the rest with key provences under control?

In my alternative history, I see a unified HRE until sometime after the Reformation, at which point it (absolutely has to) stay Catholic. Maybe put down some rebellions in the North, then, another event to grant more freedoms to the non-Catholics. Then, because the Pope is never keen on either a unified Germany or a strong HR Emperor, having the Pope's political allies cause problems in Italy, eventually leading to major revolts in Italy. Cue strong reactionary reforms in Vienna, leading to a change to Protestantism (similar to the English variety), conversion of certain proviences, and a declaration that the German people are no longer subject to the whims of Rome, declaring a German state in their own right thus loosing the cores in Italy and a tag change to Germany.

Has something similar been done? What do people think?

Cool, I personally like it. Perhaps it should also give France, Poland, and some others a Casus belli against you, and if the empire is not unified or still limited to a certain size after a certain time period, you get the event "No one recognizes our claims," or something like that, where the player would lose his shields and revert to Austria.

HRE Tag Creation

Forgive me if my German is bad...

Any thoughts? Sicily/Naples probably shouldn't be included as cores, but I wanted to create a unified Italy and Germany from the HRE later, so that's why they are included. Besides, didn't one of Fredrick Barbarossa's heirs peter away the HRE to keep Sicily?

However the Empire never was a tight unity but rather a loose confederation of sovereign entities ranging from cities to whole kingdoms. The efforts of several Emperors to turn the Empire into a real superpower were always frustrated by the desire of the German princes to remain independent. The beginings of the modern German state begain in 1485 when Fredrick III (Hapsburg) needed money to invade Hungary from the princes. The Emperor also wanted his son, Maximilian, elected emperor. In return, the dukes demanded a Reichstag, or parlament, to further define the relationship between the Emperor and the dukes. The future of Germany is in your hands. This is the inheritance event if successful. I agree there should be at deathdate an event to switch back to HAB and loose the cores, but I'm too lazy to draft it now:

I'm deathdating this at 1550. Too late (60 years)?

- it is Die Reichsreform. Perhaps you should just call it Imperial Reform, though
- Friedrich V wasn't really about to invade Hungary, actually he needed the German princes' support to retake Vienna and most of Austria which had been captured by Mathias Corvinus. For the same reason, I don't think Friedrich's sorry attempt of an Imperial reform is the right point to give the possibility for unification of Germany; he was in absolutely no position to expand his power at that time, in fact this was one of the worst situations in Austrian history, and in order to get any support he would have had to make great concessions, further weakening Imperial authority.
When Maximilian implemented his imperial reform in 1512, there was a much bigger possibility for a more unified German Kingdom than anytime during Friedrich's reign.
- in any case, a greater imperial reform would only have led to a unified Kingdom of Germany. Recreating a centralized HRE, i.e. one including the Kingdoms of Burgundy and Italy, was never on the agenda and there was never even a remote chance for that happening after 1419. All reform projects attempted or implemented during the EU2 period referred just to the Kingdom of Germany.

Thanks for the help! This is part of the problem with getting your history piecemeal from assorted books of sometimes questionable quality. Were their reform projects that had any chance of success in creating a Kingdom of Germany?
