So with the new expansion out I decided to jump back into EU4. Test campaign was Brandenburg. Did the standard aggressive expansion stuff and eventually became the emperor. Then the Reformation kicks off and being the Emperor I'm automatically the leader of the Catholic league. Didn't really care all that much, my main gripe is that you can't pass reforms before a dominant religion has been established.

So how do you actually establish dominance? As a test I declared war on Burgundy with the Imperial Ban CB for Breda. I do this because there is no other CB. It calls in their allies and the Protestant league on their side, and the Catholic league on my side. Two year curbstomping later, I'm approaching 100% war score. I dont even care about Breda, I just want to kill the leagues so I can go back to politics. But no matter how I make the peace offer the league will not go away. Empire screen says there is still Religious War.

So my question is: how do I kill a religious league?

The Protestants have to declare a League War on you. You'll know when it happens; the war will be called "War of the Protestant League" or something like that. Once that happens, you can establish religious dominance for iirc 50% warscore.

So, in other words, the League that now consists of England and Oldenburg has to declare war on the catholic league, which consists of France, Castile, Brandenburg, Austria, Denmark, and essentially all of the German minor states, before I'm able to do a damn thing with the HRE mechanics?

Pretty much. From what I remember, though, there's a window before the Protestants automatically lose.

For anybody who might read this in the future who has the same issue as me, there is in fact a window where Protestants have to attack or else they automatically loose the conflict. For me it happened in 1607. Thanks for the replies Freudia, it definitely helped reduce my frustration with the system!
