A soviet Army consisted of about 50.000 men organized in about 7-10 divisions of 7.000 men each so in fact it's pretty close to a big corps in the Western armies. But I do not see how would it be possible to represent that with the HoI3 organisation system.

I think their so-called Tank armies were the size of a Corps (And their Tank Corps were the size of a division). But their Rifle armies were generally the size (Or slightly smaller) as normal armies.

The Soviet armies would have consised of about the same number of divisions as an Allied army, but most of their divisions were smaller due to both doctrine and strength losses, so they were slightly smaller than the average Allied army

Yeah, that's what I meant by their armies being 'slightly smaller'.

I think you can in fact represent that in the game by using smaller divisions with less brigades.

Ever so slightly OT, but weren't USSR army units IRL small enough so as to more or less resemble, for example, an American corps in size?

For the most part Red Army "Army's" were what other people called a Corps but it varied all over the place.

Tank Corps were division sized units at the end of the war...but early war Mechanized Corps were true Corps sized formations. Mechanized Corps late war were substantial formations but nothing near to the early war ones.

But Red Army nomenclature was "flexible" so inevitably you will find exceptions. Also anything that had Guards attached to the name also was overstrength as were the so called shock armies. It also varied a lot by what year you were in...in 42-43 a lot of the armies were composed of brigade sized forces that were later expanded into divisions.

But a soviet army was not the same formation as a western Army sized unit, that was the "Front" HQ in the Red Army.

Thanx for the knowledgeable answers.

I suppose you can represent this by, as said above, making small divisions consisting of two or three brigades and by appropriately renaming your HQs and units. There should, for example, be no problems in naming a corps an "Army" or an army or army group a "Front" etc.

As for the divisional/corps/army support units they simply have to be understood as abstracted in the brigade stats and doctrines of the respective country. I think this is next to necessary as well as anything else easily could turn into micro management hell. Though I'm sure there will be mods for those who just can't get enough. :D

I was wondering, can I form my own theaters, or are they auto-created? F.e. can I choose which provinces go to Theatre A or Theatre B?

AFAIK theaters are auto created by the AI with no influence from the player possible.

According to the manual, you create theaters just like any other levels of HQ.

HQs yes, including theater HQs, but creating theaters themselves, I think no.

The manual is not very clear but I cannot find anywhere that you can create theaters yourself. And, IIRC, in a DevDiary thread King (?) said that they are AI created only.

Do note that the theater (an AI generated area on the map) is not identical with the theater HQ (which can indeed, per the manual, be created by the player).

I know what King said but I guess it changed since. I do not see how AI-created theaters could coexist with user-created theater HQs. Either you create too few theater HQ's and theaters are useless, or you create too much and they are not representative. Well I guess we'll have to wait until the demo so someone tries that out. :)

Soviet Tank Corps were the equivalent of a very strong armoured division. Up to 1943, it consisted of a heavy tank brigade (KV or IS), 2 tank brigades (T-34) and a motorised infantry regiment. After 1943, another tank brigade was added, and the T-34 upgraded to the T-34-85 in favoured units. Soviet infantry armies consisted of between 3 and 9 divisions, so were nominally slightly stronger than an Allied infantry corps.

And this solved the question. Theaters are AI generated and cannot be created by the player. Too bad.

However this seems good as a substitute.

Just a couple of things:
Only land units count towards the 5 limit, air and naval units are "free".
Theatre HQs can have an infinate number of units attached.
