Is it possible to display the number of divisions a leader can command, when it has been modified by an HQ?

If you put an HQ in a stack with a field marshal, but then add a 13th div the nubmer of divisions still goes red even though the FM should be able to command 24 div's (I've never done this as I'm not sure he can actually command 24 as the number is red... guess I worry too much!)

He can command 24 in battle, but not is his own stack.

ie, If you are attacking from one direction, you can attack with 2 units under different commanders without getting a penalty, but not under the same commander.

ie, the number of divisions he commands in his own stack remains the same, the number of divisions he commands in battle doubles.

There are two Command limits. One is for the formation that a leade commands and the limits are 1 3 9 12

The other Command limit refers to the number of div that can be in an offensive. The number of divisions in an offensive can be increased by a HQ to double the number of the highest ranked leader. One leader assumes command in a battle where there are more than one corps. His rank determines the number of divisions that can efficiently attack. A HQ doubles the number of the divisions that the highest ranked leader can command. If you have an HQ and at least one FM in an attack, then the total number of divisions that can attack effectively is 24.

And if you have more than one HQ in this fight, this number increases again. Seen it, but can't remeber the correct numbers.

You are probably remembering the effect of an attack from several directions with one or more HQ present. That is represented as 17/54, meaning:

1) an attack from 3 directions
2) highest ranked leader is a General
3) an HQ present doubling the number of attackers

9*3*2=54

If you think that you are seeing more than that, I would save the game and post the info in Fiendix's draft FAQ about leaders and land combat:
