Hows the game now?

I wonder whether somebody could give me an impartial opinion on Rome and its expansion.

I played and was disappointed by the demo when it was released. Has the game improved any and is it worth a second look?

Since the demo? It certainly has. I'm new to it myself and it's my first PI game, but I've enjoyed it (with VV that is, vanilla dissapointed me too).

All in all an 8/10. Some modders are doing interesting things with it right now too.

I've enjoyed it. Its a bit more tedious than EU3 and lacks the depth of CK, but if you like Roman things then its not a bad game.

I still dont really enjoy it compared to the other Paradox games i have. But i have very high hopes in good mods in the future which seem to come together right now.

This obviously isn't impartial:

I didn't really like Rome at launch but I do like it with Vae Victis. It has a playing style that is sufficiently different from the other Paradox strategy games that I can enjoy playing it on and off and I love the succession problems and civil wars that tend to crop up every few decades unless you are very lucky or very good.

It is a nice contrast to the "your nation is stable and nothing bad happens to it when you play it safe" syndrome that most of Paradox' games suffer from in singleplayer.

If you want to give it a go, definitely buy Rome and VV together rather than just Rome itself.


To compare with EU3, EU3 with expansions is, to my mind, the better game than Rome with the VV expansion, but Rome+VV has more charm and style.

Thankyou for the responses to this question. I know this wasn't my thread but it has been useful to me as well - I had been debating which I should get out of Rome and EU3 for a while now, and I think Peter's post above has swayed me into choosing EU3.

Actually STGeorge, Descartes is developing a large and interesting mod called
Imperium. So large that it has it's own subforum under the mod forum. You
might want to check it out.

All in all, this is also my first Paradox game (I soon after purchased EU3
:Complete) and although I could give you my opinions, I'll just simply state
that I play this game more than EU3. More than any PC game right now
actually...

Original EU:R , I'd say 6/10.
With VV expansion, 8/10.

Not the greatest of Paradox titles, but I love things Roman. I still think EU2 with AGCEEP is the best.
