It was slightly tarnished, then i answered an allies call to war and it became tarnished

That reputation is actually your badboy score - which is generally increased for DOW's or gaining provinces, and reduced for losing provinces and also gradually over time.

Best advice is just to wait and play conservatively, if you are worried about it.

You only go down in BBs by losing territories to non-pagans (in peace treaties, defections and creating vassals) and with time. The rate of BB decay with time depens on the level of difficulty of your game and in the diplomatic rate of your monarch, so increasing your Aristocracy level helps reduce your BB faster.

BB affects several things, between them your diplomacy and your stability costs, that increase with your BB. Once your BB goes over half the maximum (hover your pointer over your reputation), your stability costs soar. Once your BB goes over maximum bad things start to happen, and if you play at very hard every country in your continent and every neighbour in the world will declare war to you unless they are in your alliance.
