Anyone have any ideas how the hanseatic league will be handled?

I'd guess a military alliance, like it has been throughout all of EU2, possibly with some more members if any new independent cities are added to the region.

The Hanseatic League should emerge only if the HRE or Sachsen make a Wendisch Crusade, in real around 1147.
The coastline from Lubeck to Danzig was at 1066 inhabited by slavic tribes like Obotrits and others, so the Hansa isn´t to be if there is no crusade IMO

Great point Wasa. Prior to the Saxon "crusades" and campaigns, (Alt)Lubeck was a seat of Wendish princes and the entire coast from Lubeck to Danzig and beyond in the hands of Slavs. So there shouldnt be any League until/unless the Germans launch the Drang nach Osten...

Yeah but League could go different way, after all league is like, confederation of trade cities, the first league were between Lubeck and Hamburg. So, League should be there in a way (it was more of trader league in beinning) but you are right that there had been no march to east, it would be a very different form and shape of League, it may not had been strong enough to knuckle Danemark for trade rights. But the point is that league would exist because of the canal between Lubeck and Hamburg, avoiding pirate and cut in the time of traveling.

Well the central part of the League as we know it depended on Lubeck and the cities having the "Law of Lubeck" I think, plus the merchants on Visby which IIRC were first "patronized" by Henry the Lion specifically as owner of Lubeck.

But yes, I guess Hamburg and Cologne could themselves have formed a League; Hamburg was big by contemporary standards and was definitely a center of trade after the decline of Hedeby, while Cologne was the largest city in Germany for centuries and the center of the Rhenish trade with England and the North...

However, the desire to form city leagues in Germany for mutual protection was a direct result of the decline of the Emperor's power in Germany, and so a feature of the LATER Middle Ages, not of 1066-1250.

So Zhai, after reading your other posts, I think if we both have our way, it will never reach that point! I plan to be dominating the Baltic as HRE way before the mid-13th c., so there wont be a need for the League in my campaign...

Wonder if destroying the Hanseatic league or not letting it form would be detrimental to the economy of the Baltic/North Sea area. :)

Good question. I guess that depends if youre a Saxon or a Swede! I think Henry the Lion started it all by granting the German merchants in Lubeck and Visby privileges and promising to protect them and their trade. And Henry took his lead from Adolf of Holstein, who was also pushing to open the Baltic to German commerce. So at least at first, it was the princely class promoting the expansion of trade in the area, albeit with selfish interests in mind.

The short answer is probably yes, it would be detrimental. But if I am that prince, I only care whats good for me!
