How will carrier-capable multi-role aircraft behave in naval battles? Will they act as fighters first and only bomb if unopposed? Will they prioritize enemy ships and only engage enemy planes in self defense? Will they be automatically split, with some attacking ships and others intercepting planes?

2. An airwing only ever runs one mission, even if several are selected. It only runs CAS missions if there are battles going on etc. So having the Air Superiority mission active actually means that an air wing would never do any other missions (since they can always run air superiority). We discussed this back and forth and decided that this was the best approach (since that is how the game already works and there are a lot of assumptions built around it in other parts of the game).
So, if you give a fighter-bomber wing both Air Superiority and Naval Strike, it will only do Air Superiority. If you want the wing to attack ships, you need to set it to only do the NS mission.

You can combine missions, but the one(s) with high priority needs to be conditionally available. Combining Naval Strike and Port Attack works even now.
The problem with this is that carrier planes don't have missions

When battle is joined, they just participate. They don't run missions so much as they add to stats

...writing that out, I think that might answer the question. Because planes don't properly fight, any multirole planes would just add to the naval strike and AA stats of the fleet in total

...I think. I'm never actually sure how the naval damage is calculated

I would think that if you put a torpedo as the primary weapon, that aircraft would attack primarily with torpedoes.
If you put bombs as the primary, then it'd attack primarily with bombs
And if guns are the primary weapon, then it'd by default act as a carrier fighter, and attack enemy aircraft first.


at least, this would make sense to me, but I don't know how it's going to actually work.

This, CAG duty is different than missions, they just happens when a carrier enters combat. I want to know how it will works too.

I'm too lazy to properly test it, but if BICE is any indication: multiroles do damage ships. My guess is that CAG duty entails your typical Naval Strike; whether airwing is allowed to damage ship depends on Naval Strike mission availability... and time of day, since CAG planes only to kill each other during night. Of course, it might also be two separate missions: one for fighters and one for everything else (seeing how fighters always launch, regardless of carrier penalty) - something I have no desire of spending time finding out. And BICE might be implementing multiroles completely differently from what we'll get in vanilla, so who knows?

By this point I'm actually more interested in question: if "fighter-type" multiroles will damage ships, will they also ignore carrier stacking penalty?

Multi roles will be bugged on the current patch, because it is not the same planes for different mission. For attacking ship, the planes will load with bomb and cannot dog fight reasonably. One will need to decide what role before hand to arm the multi role.

In next patch, they can just disable multi role on CAG. Like heavy fighter, there is no CV version.
