I know the rules for "political" rebels (Jacobins, etc.) are that the government falls if the rebels control the capital, but I am curious how it works for nationalist rebels -- if Irish nationalists rise up against UK, for example, what needs to happen in order for Ireland to be created? What about Canadian nationalists? In my game I'm fighting a war against UK and when I tried loading up the game as UK, I saw that the Canadian nationalists were ready to revolt and the Irish nationalists weren't far behind. Assuming they do, does UK typically suppress the Irish and Canadian rebellions?

Nationalist rebels will usually enforce their demands once they have taken control of most, if not all of the provinces that they have cores in. Ireland for example would have to take over the entire Irish Isle and occupy it for some time in order to retain independence. Unfortunately with Victoria 2, there's no way to see how much progress the rebels are making so when rebels break a country, it comes suddenly. I hope I answered your question, if not please clarify.

Thanks, that was a helpful answer.

A related question I have is what form of government would the Irish nationalists create? I tried loading up UK in the 1861 scenario (if you start the game in 1836 they're at war and can't release satellites) and released Ireland -- it got a HM's Government. I also loaded up a test game where I had 100% warscore on UK and used Liberate Country for Ireland -- it got a Democracy. But what happens if the nationalist rebels install their own government? Given that when Ireland gained independence in real life they chose not to have a monarch, I would hope the rebels would choose the same.

When I look at "IRE - Ireland.txt", it specifies "government = democracy", so I would guess that's what the rebels would install -- but can anyone confirm that?

Typically when nationalists gain independence they will have the government type of the nation they broke free from so if UK had a HM's government, then when Ireland breaks free, they will also have a HM's government.

What are the nationalist rebel ideologies called? I feel like I'm playing an old Infocom game, trying to guess the magic words.

In my experience, it usually crashes my game, anyway, Just use the "revolt" cheat, it's much more effective. You can get every last possible rebel in a province. I've made a million pops rebel in a single province in India once.

Nationalist Rebels do not have a universal ideology rather, they obtain the ideology of the country they rebelled from eg. Catalonia Nationalists who rebel from a HM's government in Spain will retain a HM's government when they gain independence.
