So I am playing as an Aric Buddhist in the Duchy of Pagan. Arism doesn't have dharmic pacifism so followers can do holy wars. I want to vassalize Manipur by doing a holy war, since Arism is pluralist. Though last time I tried vassalizing independent infidel counties it seized the territory instead. How would I vassalize a county with a different faith/religion without seizing the territory, do you have to use the holy war for duchy CB, or the holy war for county CB. I like having multi-religious kingdoms in CK3 but the problem is there is very little you can do to achieve a multi-religious kingdom for right now.

A "holy war" CB is explicitly declaring war on another realm for the purpose of seizing territory held by those of another faith. It will therefore dispossess every title held by those of Hostile or Evil faiths in the target territory, and vassalize the remainder. Declaring a bigger holy war won't change that, so if you want a multi-faith kingdom I'm afraid you'll need to use less expedient CBs.

Pluralist faiths don't remove vassals under the target title when holy warring.

If you have a pluralist faith and declare a duchy or higher holy war you'll vassalize any one whose remaining titles are only below the title you holy warred for.

It should be noted that regardless of your faith doctrine, you will seize any land from rulers within the title that you can't vassalize - for instance, any land directly held by a ruler that remains independent after your holy war.
