How to use the Editor

I can't seem to figure out how to use the Editor, I've sat there and fiddled with it for two hours, and I'm to afraid to save something and check it.
Can someone please explain to me how it works? I know its a lot to ask (its a big application) but I need to know.

Don`t use the so called "Editor". It messes up your game. It is better to use Notepad.

And how would I use Notepad? Please, explain it to me, this is a thread BECAUSE I don't know how to use the editor/notepad (in this case) to edit anything in HoI.
