The only way I see would be to own your own COT but 500 gold is a lot to save up. My merchants get competeed out straight away and I can't match the small traders for tech.

And just like a European (although moreso) if you want to trade seriously you need trade ideas(s) and/or advisor(s).
Westernise and become a good tech country. Or for a while if you're Muslim then trade with the Chinese and Indian techs where you have an advantage.
Join the Trade League of a merchant republic. I believe doing so should give you the merchant compete chance of your trade league leader in the CoT it controls against non-league members. Other members in the league will also avoid competing with you. It will give you no advantages in CoTs not in the league, however.
Actually trading as an Asian or something is much easier because you get far less competitors. It's enough to have the free trade slider at 0 to trade well.
