Ok had enough of this GP sillyness especially considering it tends to assign GP's to bizzare countries of medium to small size from time to time. Anyways I hear mentioned that you can check "Score Comparison" in the ledger.
I've done so but nothing is organized in a Power #1, #2 - #10 ranking.

There is a score ranking column. Do I simply look at the "highest score" and order it that way and then count the top 10 highest scores and anybody in the Top 10 is considered by the game to be a Great Power?
If yes I am not so sure thats true because I'm 95% sure I had an alliance cancelled because "Georgia" schleped into GP status despite not even being in shouting distance of the top score according to that ledger.

Score does not seem to correlate to great power in my experience either. They do seem to be the largest, richest, and most powerful nations.

Usually anyway, Georgia being one seems weird. Are you sure it wasn't that Georgia just had an alliance with another great power?

Might have been. I seirously find this GP stuff to be extremely rage worthy. At first I was sort of in favour of the idea but with the mystery surrounding it all and the constant "oh sorry you're too big now alliance break laterzzz" behaviour its annoying.

Also can anybody explain to me how this isn't weird? Georgia is allied to Muscovy an undisputed GP. I am also a GP because I have the -25 GP Rival modifier with other GP's. So why is it so damn easy for Georgia to ally me? Why aren't they getting the -100 GP modifier on their side?
They would have allied with 2 GP's for -200 if I click that.

I will and i bet they cancel it next turn and if they don't thats even stranger.

I think if you're earning any score points for that month then you are considered a great power (so anyone in the top 10 of admin, diplo or military ranking).
That would be pretty silly, should at least be 2 out of 3 categories or something.

Unfortunately, you may be right.

Yeah I thought it depends on monthly score but sadly found that this not the case. Silly really that something like this is not readily apparent. Having something like this be a hidden mechanic makes no sense at all.

What's stupid though is how vassals/lesser parts of a union aren't added, so you have Denmark with Sweden/Norway, or Poland with Lithuania not considered a great power.. while Lithuania itself is.

I've had problems similar to that as well. They really should make a tooltip or something. My first reaction to this great power thing was to wonder why they didn't have any ranking whatsoever for it.

Playing early game today as Hungary. I was allied to Poland and France, both very happy with me.

Poland was in a war and had called me in. They peace'd out and immediately broke our alliance. I go to the alliance tooltip and it says -100 GP. So now apparently Poland is a great power.

Ok, so I give it a thought and decide I'd rather have Poland as an ally, so I break of the alliance with France and get my alliance back with Poland.

A month goes by and suddenly France offers me an alliance. Apparently Poland is no longer a great power.

My first thought was maybe they got some mercs during the war and that put them in the GP group, but then deleted them afterwards.

Thankfully, Wiz said they'd be tweaking the Great Power malus in the next patch:

This will be tweaked to be a smaller penalty, and won't apply to countries you are already allied with (so they won't drop your alliance because of allying another GP, but it'll still be harder to get them to sign on an alliance with multiple GPs).

the malus of -100 is lowered in the newest beta to -50. Great improvement in my opinion, now the problem only occurs when a nation has 3 great power allies instead of two.

.

I think the most important part is that they won't just suddenly drop any existing alliances, it's just harder to get them. Unless I misunderstood.

I believed this is the case. It's actually quite easy to become 'great power'... some of the so called 'great powers' may not even be regional powers... just medium-sized blobs.
