In the diplomacy screen for your country it will say ______ at war with A, B, and C.

A is the leader of the alliance.

Also, you can offer peace...when that screen pops ups....the shield for the opposing nation will say "as leader of alliance"...or..."a separate peace". Clicking on the shield will change it from leader of alliance to separate peace....:)

When at war, I always check to see who declared on who first. It seemed to me that this first agressor was the one considered head of the alliance at that time. Is that wrong? It seems to work for me when I am trying to take territory or money before a peace is signed by the big boys.

It is confusing. The war leader of the alliance is the first country who declared war or the country who received that first declaration. This is independent of the alliance leader who invited the other countries to the alliance.

As mentioned above, you can look at your diplomacy screen to see the first opponent listed. Or when you offer peace, you can read the text next to the shields in the peace offer box.

Once you know where to look, its pretty clear.

Just think of it this way:
There is an Alliance leader for Peace times.
And One For each War. This can be the same nation but does not have to be.
EDIT: Duties: Peace leader - Invite, Kick out Member nations.
War leader - May sign peace treaty on behalf of all members.

Let's construct an example here.

Spain, nervous about a rapidly expanding France, invites England and Austria into an alliance. Spain is the alliance leader, only they can invite new members.

France, in response, creates an alliance with Scotland, Portugal, and Denmark (TAN: this must be a multiplayer game, such logic would NEVER occur to the AI) So France leads this alliance.

Now, England declares war on Scotland, and everyone honors the alliances.

For a French alliance member, the diplo screen would read At War with England, Spain and Austria. the Spanish members would have At War with Scotland, France, Portugal and Denmark.

Even though Spain and France are the (to use Castelion's terms) peacetime leaders, in this war, it is England and Scotland who have the right to sign a treaty for their entire alliance.

Hope this helps.

I think the easiest way is to check the ledger. Look at the list of wars. The country listed first in each alliance is the leader for that war, for example, England, Portugal, and Prussia vs France, Savoy, and Kleves means England declared war on France, and England is the leader of the attacking alliance and France is the leader of the defending alliance.

The only power the overall leader of an alliance, or in other words, the nation that formed the alliance, has is the ability to invite new members, and expel current members. During wartime the attacking alliance leader becomes the nation that originally declares war, and the country that originally has war declared against them becomes the leader of the defending alliance.

Wow!

I was rather miffed that I couldn't negotiate for an alliance I had formed at great expense that was able to take care of problems in several corners of Europe.

Thanks for the clarification...

Doesn't this then further disadvantage those in 1.05 (under new diplo rules) ith those who are on bad terms with the organizing country's associates and friends bound by RM? Careful, careful.
