Then perhaps you should consider another forum or a serious server upgrade? A forum without search abilities is not that exciting... It sucks...

Why not just put a 30-40 sec timer on the searches and make them for registered (product registered if you really want to cut down on the hits) users. That should cut down on the spam, and actually allow customers some function.

Any way to make the Google search isolate to only one specific game? Maybe if Paradox can't support a search function on these boards there might be some way to facilitate using Google in a simpler way. For instance if you isolate each game's forum into a subdomain (virtual in phpBB). So I could google site: victoria.forums.paradoxplaza.com for Vicky and euiii.forums.paradoxplaza.com for EUIII.

yeah that is a difficult part of searching via google. If paradox could do that it would help.
I generally keep adding "-hoi2" and "-victoria" etc when I do searches this way. That gets rid of about 50% of the cruft from a search via google.
We still have no search function? I thought there was supposed to be one with the implementation of the new software.

It is also possible to incorporate the customized google search engine mentioned by PackMan into this forum using a small html code snippet. That way, you could get rid of this thread and questions about a missing search function without actually providing a native search engine.

When there was a forum upgrade the old server was taken off line. Would it be pssible to use the old server for the fun forums and use the new server for the rest. Then it could be possible to search as each server would have a large amount of spare capacity.

vBulletin is perfectly able to perform searches. They've explicitly removed it I take it as their budget for web server stuff is pretty low I gather.
Really its surprising - their software version is also very old, and the cost is negligible to upgrade which plugs a lot of holes. The newest vBulletin does indeed come with many search features which allow the administration to limit the number of searches (limiting load).
And I mean, I know EUIII isn't the hugest selling game, but we aren't talking huge investments here.
