Is there any way to change the map, though?

The EU2 gold version (Asian version, that is) does have a Korea split up in 8-something provinces...

Find Inferis's thread about tbl hacking. It is very interesting and contains all kinds of information on maps.

Inferis you should try to get a copy of the gold version; maybe that would have some clues as to what you can do...
And how would I be doing that? :(

Hmm, maybe it's possible... I'm leaving on a trip to thailand next week, maybe i'll find a copy there. But on the other hand, why should I be spending money (especially since i'm jobless) on another copy of the game.

Hmmm...

The new Asian release must have clue we need as to the map and PTI. I noticed Korea also, and somebody had to alter the map, making me believe that it is alterable. I wish this mystery was figured out, but I fear it will haunt us for some time...PTI!

As has been mentioned in several other threads on this topic: Typhoon are the Asia distributors for EU2, and have exactly the same tools Paradox have to their disposal. With these the map is changeable (after all, it's made with those tools), without it isn't. No mystery.
