FTs were used by France at the beginning of the war, by the Vichy French in Africa, and by the Germans in Western Europe.would you assign an FT-17 to any theater?

would you assign an FT-17 to any theater? look I can see assigning some obsolete gear to second line units and what not, but the main use of a lot of the starting gear is either to smelt for materials OR sell it to third world/minors/ass end of nowhere as it should be better than what they can build, or afford to build (though given the lack of roots in the tech tree... the minors should start the game with analogous gear)
Yeah, i would. I'll happily use interwar planes in Africa and southeast Asia. Also, you can lend them to other countries and get XP for them. That's a reasonable and historically accurate use for outdated equipment - the major powers did not retrofit biplanes into B-52s after all.
Actually it is less lend and more sell or even scrap. While a lot of interwar planes were retained, they weren't retained for front line use, or were used in placed where their handicaps were less importan, Recee, night fighters, CAS, etc.
But the problem, right now is that if you have enough obsolete planes, you get a pop up warning you about it, as if prodding you to create new wings..
I think that reminder is intended to make sure you don't keep producing old models you don't need more of, not to hint at some now-removed feature of refitting old planes.
So you would prefer the 3 man to a rifle approach? This is not sarcasm, but literally what we are talking about. That old stuff only gets issued if you run out of anything newer entirely.Total agree, why provide easy targets for your enemy to gain experience points off you and drain your manpower. You should be able to scrap them and recover some of the metal and rubber that went into production.
Just thinking, MP divisions for partisan suppression would be a good outlet for some equipment.

Personally, I'd rather that 2/3 of my desperation division fielded in an emergency had old guns rather than no guns at all.
Speaking of old equipment...
I got some really old planes from Austria and possibly Czechoslovakia after the national focus events. Those planes just sit in my reserve and I couldn't even land lease them to other country. Has anybody else encounter this problem?
Because its really immersion breaking, no one is going to issue WW1 vintage planes during 1943 even if things are not going well. Its just a waste of trained pilots.
If I run out of newer models them automatically the older stuff is used as replacement as far as I know. I really don't want this to happen for reasons of immersion. Lend leasing really old crap away is equally far fetched IMO.
one thing is a rifle another is a tank or a plane. If you are having to issue Panzer Is in 1944, facing with comparatively modern armor, you are probably irreversibly screwed, and dragging it on will only cost the lives of your soldiers and citizens.
Because, game mechanics aside, a division of panzer I should be able to do jack and shit to a Sherman, a Lee or even a basic T-34 from any angle

But it still is an armored MG post that can move, so it may support infantry perfectly well. Tank is not neccesairly used as counter to enemy tanks - actually, most often it wasn't.
Old tanks were usually used to:
-provide armored towers for fortifications,
-provide tracked hulls for TD, SPAA, SPART, gun tractors, and some other uses
-in police duties, especially in conquered territories, as partisans often lacked any anti-tank weapons except granades and molotovs
So it would be nice if you could convert tanks to support vehicles and maybe use them to get some cost reduction in fortification building.
HOI4 doesn't simulate fuel or spare parts, so there is no downside to putting vehicles on the field, except maybe if you don't have the supplies for them. Old tanks are better than no tanks at all. They still do damage, they still provide armour protection for your divisions, and they still move fast. If I was a WWII grunt, I'd rather have interwar tanks, guns, and aircraft for support than no support at all.Problem is that a Panzer I would tie resources (spares, mechanics, crew) that would be better off in a more modern vehicle. So, while I can see obsolete gear used in second line, suppression and the like, using it in the front lines? nope, nope and nope
You already can. Form such divisions and deploy them at 20% training. Voila, rapidly trained militias with vintage gear. Enjoy.Another way would be if scrape the barrel recruitment option is used you have the ability you use the equipment to rapidly deploy untrained poorly equipped militia units.
If you still have a large number of Panzer Is lying around by 1944 you've essentially produced way too many of them, and/or not used them enough, which are different topics entirelyone thing is a rifle another is a tank or a plane.
