So, I was doing a Luck of the Irish playthrough (pic related, it's the playthrough), to take advantage of my republican tradition. I wanted to switch to become a republic of some sort.

The idea that I have to fill out two entire idea trees and wait for a below 50-claim heir seems a bit excessive. Anyone know a faster way to democracy? (Or a republic)

The reason I don't want to waste the ideas is that I want to colonize. And none of the ideas seem very good for that. (Economic, Trade, Influence, Aristocracy)

The only other alternative since the hidden noble rebel nerf is revolutionary rebels. You have some idea-group chance for them in both aristocratic and religious.

As for good colonization ideas, trade is reasonable as you're conquering into an end node and it will give you a bit more naval FL, more merchants for steering, and more money from it. As such, it's one of a few respectable early picks in Ireland. Unfortunately, it's hard to justify economic in a similar fashion.

Influence and Aristocratic are reasonably good idea groups in general for vassal feeding strategies, as you get more diprep, more FL from vassals, and aristocratic hands you an extra diplomat, but there's not much money here and it'll delay colonization.

Basically, IMO you should just go trade --> economic --> colonies (work in a military idea there somewhere too, maybe quantity to spam buildings with economic) or pick aristocratic or religious and hope for the best. There's no really good method AFAIK.

As for the colonial game, you can definitely leverage trade + ships to trash competing fleets and take colonies for yourself, then grab a colonial idea later and keep going, but you could even realistically have a heavy/dominant colonial presence despite being incapable of making colonies yourself.

Events are faster, but also uncontrollable. Well, I should say less controllable as the decisions leave you waiting for the moment that you have no heir, or weak claim.

If you go the decision route make sure you stop accepting royal marriages at a certain point. You are more likely to get no heir.

If you do get rebels that can switch your government let them siege your capital and wait a couple years. If you have vassals they will try to take back what the rebels take, so go to war if you can. Going to war will allow you to move you're allies stacks away from the siege.

Edit. On a related topic of the Irish republic I'm certain that paradox took away there republic tradition modifier and just left them with legitimacy. I remember testing it out and seeing it for myself. Has anyone else noticed this?
